I saw a similar demonstration of a fire bomber DC-4 at our Ramona airport (without the 2 engines out and the loop!). I was amazed how aerobatic the plane was.
Thanks,

You sort of looking at it wondering just when the wing was going to come off which of course you know it hadn't as you'd know about it.
I suppose an aeroplane capable of carrying a good load a long way is quite nimble when flying with a couple or crew and little more than circuit fuel

No powered controls on the DC-6's either. The DC-4 through the DC-7 had something called "aerodynamic boost", produced by surfaces similar to trim tabs.

In 1982/3 I was a 19-year old troopie in the SA Defence Force (army), based in Bloemfontein, slap-bang in the middle of SA. One weekend I went home to Cape Town (1000 km away) and on Monday when I had to go back my lift ('ride' in american) didn't pitch. I hurriedly arranged and caught a SAAF Skymaster from Airforce Base Ysterplaat (Cape Town) to Airforce Base Waterkloof in Pretoria - that's some 600 km past Bloemfontein. And then I hitchhiked those 600 km back to the army base in Bloemfontein...
I don't know how many Skymasters the SAAF had on strength at the time, (I think four?) but 'my' one could have been the one in the video :-)

Hi Thomas,
It could well be that "Piston Paul" and I have been on the same plane that you were on. The Dutch Dakota Association bought one ex-SAAF DC-4-1009 (now back in South Africa as ZS-AUA) and one ex-SAAF C-54A (now on static display at the Aviodrome theme park, Lelystad, Netherlands. I was a passenger in the DC-4 three times. Paul, being a technician in the DDA, must have flown in the DC-4 a few times more.
Cheers, Maarten

I flew a dozen times in the DDA four (PH-DDS) and with the right person on the wheel it could do some spectacular flying. In the days that it was flying in the Netherlands it was affordable, so every penny nickle or dime was going to one of these flights. I can tell you that when i see my dvd's of this aircraft i stil have to wipe a tear away I like the DC-3 but i love the four it's a real powerhouse. Never seen this vid before but it's a good one thanks for sharing.... Jan
