The most known runway crossed by a railway is certainly at Gisborne Airport in New Zealand. It's probably less known that a railway was also crossing the former Mascot Airport in Sidney. This crossing wasn't without some risks. In 1950 a DC-3 Ansett Airwaays hit an empty coal wagon while taxiing out on the runway. The DC-3 was extensively damaged and five of the empty coal wagons were derailed. Only the DC-3's First Officer received minor injuries. In order to recreate this further and particular crossing, I had to redo the former Mascot Airport using some few elements of "1961 YSSY Sidney Kingsford Smith Intl" scenery. BTW, the airport is very busy, even with 1955 traffic. Bernard

Neat idea. Before Sepulveda Blvd. was buried in a tunnel it crossed the longest runway at LAX. Usual aircraft traffic could use the runway without needing the street to be closed, but Stratocruisers on their way to Hawaii needed crossing gates closed so auto traffic was stopped. Would have been an interesting thing to see.
A minor version of that I witnessed at San Diego (SAN) - when a Coast Guard C-130 landed, it needed to taxi across Harbor Dr. (the main access road to the airport) to get to the CG hangar. Traffic lights were used to stop traffic, and it was neat to see a big Lockheed crossing a major street. They only use helicopters now.

Is Gisborne airport package for use of FSX?? Is it stand alone scenery package without requiring anything extra such as libraries?

There is a Gisborne scenery to be used with both FS2002 and FS2004. Not easy to see, what is packed in the bgl file. At least it generates a few small buildings. But for reasons I don't know anymore, I did my own scenery with railway station in Gisborne town. And this needed third part library for sure.

At least, why bot trying the one done for FS2004? If it isn't suitable, you still might push the delete botton! Meanwile I found an other airport with direct railway connection. It's the French Le Touquet Airport LFAT. Beginning the Seventies the railway Paris-Calais-Boulogne sur Mer was prolonged to Le Touquet and the airfield. It then crossed roads, taxiway, runway and even the tarmac. The passengers could almost boarding out of the train! www.youtube.com/embed/MZy6_ZTVHzE?rel=0&autoplay=1Whti FS9 it looks like that with the railway track in front corssing the tarmac (not perfectly consistent in time, I agree) Bernard

Hi Tom,
I looked up the history of LAX and the Sepulveda tunnel, and I see no references to it actually crossing an active runway. Only that it was rerouted around the expanded airport, then straightened again when the tunnel was opened.

Looks like the reroute around the runway occurred in 1950, the tunnel opened in 1953. The gates were at the end of the runway, and allowed the strats to be very low as they crossed the street. “ Historical Notes Mines Field did not extend west of Sepulveda Boulevard. Sepulveda was rerouted circa 1950 to loop around the west ends of the extended east–west runways (now runways 25L and 25R), which by November 1950 were 6,000 feet long. A tunnel was completed in 1953 allowing Sepulveda Boulevard to revert to straight and pass beneath the two runways; it was the first tunnel of its kind. For the next few years the two runways were 8,500 feet long.*^” From: waterandpower.org/museum/Aviation_in_Early_LA.html

Too bad the FSX scenery for that LFAT airport whether it is FSX default or add on does not have railroad track or train.

No LFAT scenery shows the railway track by itself.

No LFAT scenery shows the railway track by itself. Time for freeware or payware company to make new LFAT scenery with railroad track and train for FSX, P3D, and MS2020

Obviously it's peanuts. For scenery creators for sure, and for users probably too. So who cares?

Both of these are looking nice!
I remember something in GMAX that allows for animation of scenery up to 1024 frames. I think that's about 17 minutes? Would be interesting to see a train moving in and out. Would probably play havoc with the AI traffic, though!
