100% freeware by Tom Gibson and Greg Pepper with spare parts texture and panel mods to make it work in FSX. All available at avsim and other usual places. Model harks back to FS2002 and still looks the business. Going through a "Strategic Air Command Era" phase at the moment and it fits the bill!

Is that the same plane as the one here on the site? Are those panels etc easy to install? I am not really an installment guru you see ^^

Same plane and panel, though quite a bit of screwdriver and spanner work. Mainly needed to
1) remove the 2d panel (my preference with a new wide screen display that stretches these) and then delete most of the original gauges in the VC (otherwise you get at least 147 warning messages every time you load the a/c which is maddening) and then copied in as replacements the same type of gauges, overhead panels, throttle pop up etc from the Calclassics DC-7 which I knew were FSX friendly and
2) replacing the prop textures with ones that look acceptable in FSX and some other bits and bobs.
There are a few KC97 paints around (mostly ANG) but the one in the screenie was intended for the non tanker C97 and the textures were written to go with the B377 model, so I had to rename these to match the KC97 texture bmps to go with the tanker model (in this case (KC97L) - which is why some may be surprised to see Miss OK with a tanker boom, radomes and the jet pods. Re the jet pods, there is clearly some untextured model showing through in the inlet/outlets (which is textured yellow in FS9) and doesn't look so good in FSX - probably due to the different treatment of reflective textures etc.

Hmm, sounds like allot of work. I gues i'll pass on that. As i am horrible at changing gauges etc. Tried t before, and did not go too wel. ^^

Nicely Done! IMO the '97 looks best in the white-cap schemes. I have been flying the A2A 377, its wonderful, but unfortunately 377 thru and thru. I think I'm going to try your trick and set up the CalCalssic bird in FSX. Which guages did you use for replacement in the VC? There is a really nice B-50 setup floating around out there, I may tray to shoehorn those guages in.
How does FS handle the jet-prop mixture on the L?

Am pretty sure (certain) that that was my original repaint. Looks good here though.
Just checked...yup. Thats me. The real Miss Oklahoma City was a C-97C. There are pics on airliners.net of her.

Howdy Eric! Yes, your artwork was surely made to last! Dan - it's not that hard to do. Funny, I first tried Gnoopey's RB-50 panel/gauges but they disagreed with the FDE/air.cfg and had dead needles - or maybe that was with Ito's B-36 ( !!!). All you need to do (as outlined above) is to import the gauges from the CC DC7 (latest version that works in FSX) and drop them into the KC97 panel folder. Then, one by one, copy the corresponding DC7 VC gauge names in the DC7 panel.cfg and paste over the same type for the KC97 (think I actually used a BOAC B377 panel as a base), leaving the C97 gauge coordinates and sizes as is. There are not that many to do. I got rid of the 2d panel and also - this was a bonus - imported the DC7 two pop up overhead panels and throttle - all work perfectly including manual engine starts. Enjoy. Interested to hear what you think of flight characteristics - no bad manners - but perhaps a bit overpowered (also get some slight but constant porpoising in AP/Alt hold mode). expat

. . functioning jets are not modelled - I don't think FS9/10 can do that. What I would like to do is find a fix for the untextured front and back of the jet nacelles if anyone has any ideas . .

I looked at the artwork I did back in 2002 (I think it was) and my techniques have changed quite a lot since then. My mastery of bare metal for one. I may rework this old one. If I do, I'll let you know. She is a pretty bird in this livery and Im a fan of that era of USAF aviation, especially the MATS transports.

I assume you would need to copy over a texture from the original KC-97L to get the jet nacelle texture...

Hi Tom,
Your and Greg's KC-97L has an extra texture, "parts.bmp", that has the radome and jet nacelle textures for the L model BUT even with those in the texture folder the "ends" of the jet nacelles still appear transparent in FSX, whereas when I loaded her in good old FS9, these parts were textured with a yellow color, i.e., using all the exact same texture files.
So think it's because the paint for these small surfaces was built into the original visual model in FS9 and does not show (it is transparent, rather than untextured grey solid model that you sometimes see on other a/c) because of the different way FSX deals with reflective/transparent textures, or something like that . .

BTW, we didn't create the L model - I forget who did, though. Greg only created the E and G model, as I remember.
Too bad he didn't texture that area.
