Well, here I was. All fired up and ready for pushback and wouldn't you know it, ATC says "denied, airport is IFR". Ok, restart FSX and reselect the flight but this time I click IFR. Not going to mess me up this time! Well, real weather just does a 180 on me. Now I have clear skies! Has anyone else had this happen to them? Is this common? Oh and did I mention that I was almost at the end of the flight and I hit the the ole scratch the IFR flight? My arriving airport record was gone! No record of landing either?

When sitting on the tarmac, the default weather sometimes, meaning completely at random, doesn't really download nor uses up-to-data METAR data, but ends up reusing a previously buffered copy of said weather data. When you restarted, the Wheel of Misfortune struck and the sim actually loaded and used instead the new data from the start, which was different and VFR capable. I don't say IT IS like that, but IT MAY BE, as it's happened to a lot of people... me among them. A reason among so many for people to have bought the various Active Sky or sought external weather programs.
The temporary solution in your case is very simple. Just enter the flight plan menu and change the plane kind from VFR to IFR, without restarting. The final solution is to buy yourself AS6.5 at the very least or search for an external free METAR client program.

Hi,
As stated above, you can file an IFR flight plan while in flight, and that will trigger ATC to allow you to switch to IFR. You just need a flight plan to be loaded.
Hope this helps,
