Here is a little panel project you can work on in your spare time. Calling a 80,000 pound flying brick a glider is an insult to gliders around the world. For that fact, it's an insult to flying bricks.... BTW, for an idea of how bad the shuttle glides, an F-16 (not noted for its gliding ability) is a glide ratio almost twice that of the Space Shuttle at 1.4:1 versus the Shuttle's 0.8:1. Heck, even the Cessna 172 has a 12:1 glide ratio.

While its gliding efficiency may be lower than the one of a whale falling down from the same heights... ( sorry... have just finished reading HGttG... and it stuck) ...it remains a glider insofar it GLIDES back from orbit with no thrust.

"So long...and thanks for all the fish!" Orbiter uses the glider as a training tool, as you can go anywhere, at almost any speed you wish (..and even land with thrust, if you still have some left, or have "limited fuel" turned off in options. You can even land VTOL if you wish.)
