No worries. Greece is a great new subject for an airport - this'll be great!

Hello all, After taking a break from scenery design to focus on other development endeavors and enjoy flying, I've decided to return to what got me started developing in FS. A lot has changed since my last development update, and things in my life continue to change rapidly. I've been afforded $40,000 USD by Eastern Kentucky University to attend their school. Good news, no? Back to the major point here, I've decided to cancel both my LGAT and KLAX projects. LGAT was recently made here at CalClassic, and personally I feel the KLAX is a bit of 'Tom's property' since it was one of the starting points for this whole project, therefore I shall leave it to him and his team This, however, has freed up a bit of my development time. The Northeast is coming along well, I expect release within the next couple of months I hope, but no promises. I've also been taking some flights around my KJFK Idlewild, and alongside user input, I realized that the performance and the things that I did really just aren't up there, so at some point in the future I think I shall release an update that improves the look of some things and brings the performance back up. Canada is coming along a bit more slowly because I found myself quite dissatisfied with some of the terminals I built, and redid/am redoing them. However, what I've come to show you today, is progress on something else... All the best and enjoy,

Hi Chris,
Glad to hear you're back to scenery building but I hope that won't get in the way of more important life issues.
That's a lovely rendition of the Queen's Building, now gone sadly. I'm sure we would all appreciate a complete set of the 50's buildings, including perhaps the intricate BOAC headquarters which a number of folk seem to have started but never completed.
If it's of interest to you or to others, I was inspired by Ken Lawson's early 50's Heathrow project to start an update of Wolfgang's AFCAD, which in fact became a completely new 1958/9 era ADE9X carefully measured out with the help of Google Earth and the very large scale historic on line maps we have here in the UK, possibly the best in the World. That project then spread to the airport grass with SBuilder and the surrounding land class with LWMViewer2 and then to the whole London area, using 1950's mapping with an exclusion to take out London's high rise buildings plus the London Eye and the Millennium Dome. I also took out London City airport but I can't recall how I did that. When time allows I'll modify the ADE9X to 1961 which added the Oceanic Building/Terminal 3 and the extended parking and taxiways on the east side.
Meantime I'm using Wolfgang's buildings!
Best regards
Bill

Hi Bill, Sounds great. Once you start the 61 project let me know and I'll try to help. Chris, that Queens building looks great! Can't wait to see it in a 1961 EGLL. Perhaps we could all work together.

Hi Bill and Tom, That sounds incredible Bill! If you like, I can finish all the 'newer' buildings, place them, and send them to you along with a few images I have showing the parking layout around the terminals, and let you finish the AFCAD, and if Ken agrees we could use some of his buildings for the original terminal and hangars. My idea was to make a 1957 and a 1961 version, of which there are many many many differences. Let me know what you think, Chris

I have been working with Ken on the 53 version and it is terrific. Ken has done a bang-up job on this. I am also very interested in a 57 version as that is what I primarily fly. So it would be great for the classic world to have 53 57 and 61 to pic from, kind of like the Atlanta scenery by Juan.

Hi,
in my opinion the best starting point would be a 61 version, from which the other mentioned timeframes could be more easily generated. As a creator of the old Calclassic Heathrow, I hope you do not the same mistake as I had done. Create a satellite layer for FS, for positioning your runways, buildings etc... ( After positioning, the layer can be easy removed ) The default airport AFCAD is not a veritable starting point ! But you have to use it. if you do not want to lose the ILS approaches. With a satellite layer you can more easily reposition the things.
I could try to provide such an layer if wanted.
Cheers Wolfgang

I rarely use satellite layers since I find they can be easily mis-sized and you end up moving everything when it's not needed. I instead use an aerial image and size it to fit the default airport in ADE.

Hi,
I use Maps2Bgl for this task. Never had a miss size in many years of use.

I think it could be possible in the far north or south, but I never created a airport there.

Chris/Tom,
I'd be very pleased to contribute to a 1961 London Airport which, as Wolfgang says, is probably the most useful era. Apart from anything else the north apron has less traffic to handle as Terminal 3 was operational by then.
Tom,
I'll probably send you my 1958/9 ADE version anyway to see what you think of it. I've made some adjustments to prevent or at least minimise AI head-on's without resorting to fictional taxiways and also to get ATC to recognise runways other than the active as taxi routes. And for reasons I don't quite understand but a great feature anyway, ATC/AI uses all 5 runways, both ends, according to wind direction, any strength and even in low viz. I would normally expect FS9's ATC to allocate the longest runway/s or just the ILS coded runways except in severe crosswinds.
Chris,
Thanks for that kind offer. I'll get in touch by email. I may even have photos you don't have. Both the periods '57-59 and 1961-62 were periods of relative calm on the airport's construction/development fronts. Apart from extended aprons and taxiways, the 1961 version would still have all the '57 buildings plus the new Terminal 3 and second major hangars for both BOAC and BEA. All 5 runways were still in use although some restricted.
Best regards
Bill

Hi,
have found a nice BOAC promo from 1957. There can be seen some detail from Heathrow.
Cheers Wolfgang
