Problems with FS9 and windows 8.1

Hi FOLKS

After a long absence from FS for professional reasons, i'm now with more free time to dedicate again to this hobby...

But... today i'm feeling very hunhappy and miserable... [
My desktop computer where i had my fs instaled died, my powersource short-circuited and killed the motherboard, graphic card, etc... well... it's a new computer...

So... i decided to give it a try instaling Fs2004 on my laptop...a SAMSUNG SERIES 9 with windows 8.1 .

Well, my nightmare stated here... after installing FS2004, the airplanes didn't appear in the selection window... but... they flew... so... i didn't care...

Then i went o install my SAITEK Yoke, and double throttle quadrant (for 4 engined aircraft, with flaps and prop lever) and the pedals, got to saitek website, got the lastest drivers for Windows 8.1 tested... calibrated... everything seemed fine... But when i loaded the FS2004... everything went wrong...

Whe rudder works fine, but the breaking pedals don't... the aircraft is breaking fully all time (with the breaks inverted or non-inverted... it's the same) the trottles only go to 70% maximum and 20% minimum... the rest of the sistem works fine.

I troubleshooted all hipoteses... but i'm no tired... after 2 days fighting the computer... trying everything...

My conclusion is that perhaps is a problem of compatibility of FS2004 and Windows 8.1 . Also the simulator became very unstable crashing quite often lately...

What's your opinion? What Opertative System do you use? FS9? FSX? Should i buy the FSX Golden edition? But in the forums, they say it's the same rubbish...

Flying on FS with this old propliners was a good and cheap way to put away my working stress, as project director, when my wheels left the ground my problems seemed to go away for a while... till touching down again...

All i want is my FS back... are you running windows XP in your machines to get the FS2004 working? Or running the FSX on later versions (7 or 8)?

Any fix or something for FS2004?

In the negative case to both questions... and with the end of Microsft simulation division... what should be the simulator do move to? X-plane?

My 5 cents worth.

Try re-installing. Install into a dedicated folder.

When the short cut icon appears on your desk top, right click on it. Go to properties and select: Running in windows xp compatibility mode, and tick the box regarding admin rights.

See if that helps. I have Windows 8 running on an Asus lap top, all good.

Had the same problems recently. Make sure you install FS9 in its own folder and not the program (x86) folder. For the rudder pedals, check on the sensitivities screen and be sure is set on "simple" and that the null slider is set to Saitek specs.
I've been up and running OK for the past month or so with DC-6B and L1649 and the MAAM add-ons.

Just to thank the two persons above who kindly replied.

To report my progress... i can now run Fs2004 in a more stable way, thanks to the advice to run it in XP pack 3 compatibility mode.

Now i'm fightin the saitek system and FS2004. Now i discovered why a changed the assignements and sensivities..and nothing worked. The answear is simple... i changed and corrected everything... and then... when i press OK to save options... the system discard all my options... Stupid isn't it?

I thought that it happended becASE perhaps there was no permission to change files in the directory of C:\Flight simulator 9, but is not protected... and i choose RUN FS9 AS ADMINISTRATOR... so no problem with that...

This windows 8.1 is pure nuts!!!!

Everytime i open the Assignments page i find a more bizzare thing...

I'm gonna give up tring to configure this... is hopeless... i'm going for a new estrategy... let's see if it works... if it works... i post here for you all... i have a registered copy of FSUIPC, i'm going to try to configure all from FSUIPC... let's see if it works..!!!

Hiii folks

Everything is working perfectly with FSUIPC. If you wanna run FS2004 on Windows 8.1 this is the way to go.

Disable the Joystick on FS2004 Menu, and Assign and calibrate your Joystick via FSUIPC panel... The FSUIPC don't use the FS control, it get directly the inputs from the Hardware, and doing so bypasses the interface of the O.S. and that's why the signal is correct.

If you don't have a registred copy of FSUIPC i seriously advise you to buy one, becase ther's a lot of things you can do with FSUIPC.

And also the flight simulation experience is more real, when you pull the yoke the aircraft doesn't go up like a rocket... you have a delay and heavy feel like in reality. Very very very good.

One more thing, maybe stating the obvious. Click on the battery icon at the bottom right hand side of the screen. Check that the power plan is set to "High performance" and not "power saving mode", BEFORE starting fs9...

Just a thought.

I run FS9.1 on Windows 8.1 in a desktop, not a laptop, and after installing FS9.1 in its own folder (not x86) it does everything I want it to do.
I do have some questions regarding Win 8.1 but they're not FS-related so I'll ask them in the Chat forum.

I too installed fs9 on a windows 8.1 pro laptop and have flown successfully for nearly a year now. I've installed beaucoup addons including most of the MAIW military bases and traffic, quite a few of the WOAI packages, Howard's Mix scenery files, customized water and sky as well as hundreds of modified airport files created in AFCAD2 and ADE. Problem now is...yesterday, I loaded the program and flew a Grumman Panther from Salt Lake City to Page Arizona, then saved the flight and exited. Today I go to pick up where I left off and suddenly I get an error message telling me to log in as administrator to run the program. I AM logged in as administrator. I went into the program settings and checked the 'Run in Windows XP service pack 3 compatibility mode' and also clicked the 'run as adminstrator' mode. No help there on either or both of those settings. When I ticked the 'run as administrator' and tried to start the program, I get a notification window from the OS asking me if the program ran as instructed. Obviously not. I have made no changes to the computer myself since the flight yesterday EXCEPT for an automatic update by Windows itself. I'm thinking that may have done it. But, when I tried to use system restore to back the computer up to just prior to the update, it failed. I'm looking now at a full reinstall of the whole program and all addons...not a pleasant prospect as this will in all likelyhood take most of a day to accomplish. And no guarantee that it will even work. Any advice?
