I have just made available on Avsim, under the title 'Classic Ship files for Boston Logan and Oslo Fornebu airports', files which place ships of the classic era, and wakes which give the impression of movement, in the harbours and environs of Boston USA and Oslo, Norway. They have been placed according to Ultimate Terrain USA and Ultimate Terrain Europe, and given the precision necessary to put ships in docks will almost certainly not look well in the FS9 default scenery. The wakes were created by the late David 'Opa' Marshall and released in his 'Add Animated Wakes to Static Ships - An Illustrated Tutorial', also available on Avsim. At propliner cruising altitude of about 20,000 feet you will see more wake than ship, but even at that height the movement is visible and to my eye convincing. However, I have decided to release initial files centred on two harbours because both have airports and in the case of Boston in particular the ships are very visible at ground level; this seems to me to add significantly to the California Classics scenery available for them. As the medium and large wakes are so vigorous you may find that when approaching a ship from behind at relatively low altitude it can look somewhat submerged; if this is a disadvantage of a vigorous wake it is perhaps outweighed by the advantages. Further releases may follow, but as I assume that Tom does not want the forum littered with threads on classic ships I will add news about them to this one. I owe much to David Marshall, and for the very fine ships to Mike Stevens, known on this forum, as I have realized somewhat belatedly, as Dennis the Menace.

Thanks for your efforts adding more of Mike's static ships. It isn't quite easy - I actually experienced this again!
At Boston Harbour some ships are in conflict with the addon released by Michael Schneider some times ago ("FS2004 Boston Ships 1959 Scenery" at FlightSm). Also some ships are misplaced, at least when using default Boston scenery. BTW, with exclusion type "Effect" of ExcBuilder you might delete smoke of stationary ships.

Note that any exclude file that deletes effects must come alphabetically before the file that places the effect (if located in the same folder).
For example, in the Hawaii 1959 scenery, the file that removes smoke from the stationary ships is called anosmoke_hawaii.BGL, so it is listed above the other BGL files.

My installation text says specifically that the ships have been placed according to Ultimate Terrain USA (and Europe in the case of Oslo) 'and have not been tested with the FS9 default scenery', which I believe is known to be very inaccurate on coastlines, hence the market for Ultimate Terrain. I have altered my text above so that it now mentions the need for Ultimate Terrain there. I didn't know of Michael Schneider's file, so there doubtless will be clashes, but there is the choice of using the one or the other, and one would be unlikely to install both, clashes or no. Nor do I regard smoke from static ships as of too much concern, as a proportion of them have just arrived in port or are getting up steam in order to leave it(!) However, people are free to create exclude files if they wish, bearing in mind Tom's advice.

Sorry Ken, I did't red entirely and correctly your readme. It's my fault. The problem with Ultimate Terrain is the incompability with certain sceneries like the ports in Central Europe 61 or default sceneries like Paris. The same problems occur while using the excellent water sceneries of Raimondo Taburet.

That's fine, Bernard, I quite understand. I did not know about the problems with Ultimate Terrain and ports in Central Europe 61 (thanks for telling me) but personally I shall stick to Ultimate Terrain because what matters to me is accuracy in the area adjacent to the United Kingdom. As you point out, no solution is going to be perfect,
Ken

I have now uploaded to Avsim (and it should be there soon) files for Beirut and Istanbul - both airports on coastlines and therefore suitable for this kind of treatment. There is no Ultimate Terrain for these areas and therefore they are placed according to FS9 default scenery, which makes it all very straightforward. I also have files available for Copenhagen, and in this case I have used Ultimate Terrain but not the California Classics airport, which runs very slowly on my system. If anyone would like to test this Copenhagen file please send me a private message with your e-mail address. Files for the English Channel are well advanced, Ken

Since these are placed as library objects, Instant Scenery (payware) could easily move these ships around, if needed.

The ships can be moved around but the wakes would presumably be left behind, unless the ship is a static in port and there is no wake. In order to move the wake it would be necessary to alter the xml files I enclose with the downloads and then recompile them with the Microsoft bglcomp exe. This would be rather time-consuming, but not difficult. Ken

Ah yes, the wakes. It would indeed be a little bit of job to move those (lots of trial and error), but not too bad with Instant Scenery (move the wake to its new location, and then place the ship on top of the wake with IS).

I have now uploaded to Avsim classic ship files for the port of Amsterdam. This contains far more ships than my earlier uploads, quite a lot of them statics placed in the docks. Placing has been done according to Ultimate Terrain for Europe and they will not look well in the FS9 default scenery, which inevitably some would have preferred. I am sorry about this. There is also no guarantee that they will work properly in FSX. Amsterdam is slightly different to my earlier uploads in that the docks are some way from the airport. However, those taking off and landing should get a good view of the ships, and those flying to or from the United Kingdom may find that they pass over this area fairly frequently. The second of the screenshots is one of Dennis the Menace's large liners about to exit from the docks complex near Beverwijk. Ken

FS9 Classic Ships files for Lisbon (LPPT) and Santa Maria (LPAZ) in the Azores. This file is now available on Avsim. As a result of previous issues for people who do not have Ultimate Terrain I have in this case put the files for ships in Lisbon docks in their own bgl. Those without Ultimate Terrain need not install it; they will not see ships in the docks, but they will not see them on dry land either. The other Lisbon bgl contains ships at sea and I hope will display satisfactorily with the default FS9 scenery, although I have not tested it. Santa Maria in the Azores is more straightforward, as there are no docks. Much used as a calling point by aircraft crossing the Atlantic in the classic era, there is currently no Cal Classic airport for it. However, the relatively inexpensive payware version by Tropicalsim looks well, and not seriously out of period, as there are no jetways. Not tested with FSX. Thanks again to Mike Stevens for the ships.

I somehow never got to installing all of these - so far, the Sydney, Beirut, Istanbul, and Oslo placements work great in FSX!
Wakes work - but since FSX has moving AI ships, with wakes, the stationary ships with wakes look a bit odd and redundant. So I'll remove the wakes and leave the ships anchored - which will be a nice change, since most of the FSX vessels are moving AI, which while nice, it's nice to have a variety of anchored and moving (at least in my view). I started by adding the wakes in case others who want them in their FSX install are wondering if they work or not. All 100% - great work!
Thanks!
