Hello. I have not been on this forum for a very long time. Anyway, I had to get a new computer last week because my Windows 7 computer crashed (power supply) and, of course, the new one has the Windows 8 OS. I'm attempting to install FS 2004. Thus far, I have installed the sim to its own folder (C:/program files/FS2004) and set the screen resolution for the sim to match the computer's screen resolution. I started up the sim to see what would happen and found out that the Cessna 172 (or any other airplane) does not show up when I am in the "Create a Flight" screen. The plane does show up when I hit the "fly now" button, and it appears that the scenery is correct and the "S" button changes the view, etc etc. Checked my stick to make sure it worked correctly (I have not installed FSUIPC yet) and it worked as advertised. So that's where I'm at so far. Couple of questions: How do I get the planes to show up on the "Create a Flight" screen? 2, do I install directx 9.1 into my fs2004 folder? This is going to be a slow process, most likely a couple of days to get all the calclassic scenery and planes etc, but I'd like to get started right. Thanks, Dave

Hi, i got this problem in the past, because i try FS91 on "full screen"
you can't really use FS91 on Windows 8.1 in "full screen" mode, to see planes on create a flight, just use FS91 on windowed mode (maximized) (i do like that, and i not have any more problem)
hope this help

Taking the sim out of full screen worked. Thanks. Now where do I install directx 9.1? Dave

Ok. I thought that the original fs9 directx was 9.0 and that 9.1 had to be installed separately. Anyway, next question: I downloaded edit voice pack and installed it in my sim folder but when I double click it to open it it tells me that the installation is not complete and that I have to choose whether to repair it or delete it. when I choose repair I get a screen that has a finish button so I push that. Anyway, edit voice pack doesn't open so I can't import any voice files to it. Am I doing something wrong? Also installed FSUIPC ver 3.47. It shows up in my fs2004 file as a module but does not show up when I open the sim (should show up as "module" on the bar with "aircraft" "flight" "options" etc.) it's not there. Dave

Looks like you are having permission issues, since you installed these into a Program Files folder (not the thing to do). They (and FS) should be installed outside any Program Files folder.
You can check this by turning off UAC in the Control Panel (User Account Control) and checking if FSUIPC works OK then. If so, either leave UAC off (should be OK for a computer used only by you), or:
1. Move your FS2004 folder outside any Program Files folder (I use C:\FS\FS2004). 2. Use the Flight1 Registry Fix program to point the registry to its new location. 3. Uninstall all FS utility programs inside Program Files folders that need to be uninstalled (they will be listed in the Add/Remove Programs screen). Reinstall them into the new FS folder. 4. Move all other FS utility program folders into your new FS folder.
Hope this helps,

FWIW. I built a new system in April, I thought I would give W8.1 a try and opted for that in my order. I gave it a full month and reverted back to W7 64. I found W8.1. to be obtrusive clunky and awkward to use, let alone ugly to look at. Surely an OS should be in the background and not noticeable instead I found that it got in the way more often than it should. Furthermore it did strange things to the USB devices I connect noticeably Saitek panels, joysticks, yoke and levers. It would switch them off intermittently. All the tips to work around these issues were ineffective in my case which was the final straw in my return to W7. I find it hilarious that MS products albeit because of their age do not work comfortably with a new MS OS. My Office 2007 had issues too with W8. It is one thing with a "game" being outdated but their professional stuff, well that is inexcusable?

Just got a new Win 8.1 comp myself and have been setting up FS9 and Golden Wings. I've had some minor issues, but overall, I'm liking 8.1

I stuck with Windows XP for a very long time, like many people, but changed to Windows 7 64 bit about a year ago. Subsequently I bought a laptop with Windows 8.1 on it, rather reluctantly, but of course there was no choice on the operating system. Rather to my surprise I found that I really liked it, so much so that I have now put 8.1 on my desktop as well. FS9 is installed on a separate internal hard drive and runs without problems in full screen, although I do all the setting up in windowed mode and switch to full screen just before the flight begins. The only issue has been the fact that my 7 inch Lilliput usb monitor, which I used to display FS Widgets' Electronic Flight Bag, will not work because 8.1 does not support low resolution displays. However, my 10 inch monitor does work even though theoretically the resolution of that is too low as well. With 8.1 Microsoft did make efforts to bring things into line with earlier operating systems and I do not feel that I have lost anything by transferring to it; on the contrary, there have been significant gains. I'm sure that it is generally faster than Windows 7 and the boot-up process, from a solid state hard drive, is astonishingly quick.

How do I get the planes to show up on the "Create a Flight" screen?
Press the "Alt"-key, followed by "Enter"
Works for me.
Blue skies.
