Does anyone know of a resource where I can find what bases and squadrons were active in the USAF circa 1957? Google searching such a thing comes back with a lot of unrelated and frankly useless links.

I went to Bing, typed in "USAF bases in 1957," and got a number of hits. Just scrolled down a little - 7 or 8 links - and found "Army Air Force Bases and United States Air Force Bases. Continental US, 1957." Site lists bases by state and city, and in some cases gives major unit stationed at that base at that time.

This is perfect -- with the base and unit list I can find out what they were operating at the time. I'm kicking around doing ADC for the CalClassic years, since ADC aircraft would have been a major part of flying in the late 50s in the US and Canada. On several occasions, the entire airspace of North America was closed for full-scale exercises; Ex CHECKPOINT (July 10-11 1954) was one such exercise. In it, SAC got training on penetrating "hostile" airspace, and NORAD got a chance to test their air defense chops. An interesting link is this RCAF memo regarding Ex CHECKPOINT's organization.

That is indeed fascinating. I would have missed it since I was about 12 months old at the time. However, I'm old enough to remember the commercials on black and white TV re: Civil Defense, NORAD, Air Force recruiting, and other things related to air defense.
Glad to see the link worked out for you.

You might want to try Strategic Air Command.com. It does have alot to do with Air Defense too, because most SAC bases had Air Defense Units on their bases, plus tankers. It has a secion for all the SAC Bases, their units and history of the bombardment wings. As an old time SAC guy it is a great site. Also has a section wih all the bombardment wing cheverons/patches, which is nice if you want to paint specific aircraft.
