Hi all, There appears to be a Windows Update that is causing FS9 to do nothing when you double click it. The symptom can also be a message popping up about running as an administrator. It appears that only people that are using the default fs9.exe file (which requires CD 4 to be in the drive) are affected by this. This is a security update that removes the capability to to check for a CD in the drive for many older games/sims, including FS2004. This has been a vulnerability reported for many years (but apparently never used by hackers?) that MS finally got around to closing (even though it affects one or more of their products). There are also reports that something is causing parts of a user's FS9 installation to be deleted, usually in a random way. I don't know if this is related to this update or not. Since I use the no-CD patch, I have not been affected by either problem, even after installing the Update a few days ago. So the solution (at least for FS9) appears to be to install the no-CD patch. Since MS has made running FS9 impossible using an up to date version of Windows, I feel that this is a reasonable compromise. So if you still require CD 4 in the drive, follow these instructions: 1. First, make sure that you have updated to the FS9.1 version. If not, download and install it from here: flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/2795/flight-simulator-2004-update-v91/2. Second, download the FS9.1 no-CD patch here: flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/15244/microsoft-flight-simulator-2004-v91-no-cd-patch/3. Third, install the patch by: a. Rename your current fs9.exe file (in your main FS2004 folder) to fs9.exe.orig b. Copy the fs9.exe file from the patch file downloaded in step 2 into your main FS2004 folder. c. Start FS9 and it should start without the CD in the drive. That's it, you should now have FS9 running as before. AFAIK, the patch makes no other changes to how FS9 runs. If you are having video problems running FS9 in Windows 10, read this post: Fs9 under win10Hope this helps,

PPS. The FS9.1 patch will report in Help/About that it is running as FS9.0, but this is not true.

Tom, do you know which is the serial of the update involved?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the serial but if you have not installed the update (or have either no-CD patch installed) the version number in Help/About will be 9.0. If you have the update installed (but still require CD 4) it will be 9.1.
Hope this helps,

I mean the Windows update one, normally they start with "KB", I am not admitting any more updates from Microsoft since they only make my OS slower.

Tom!
Thanks for your help and for this updated post.
You have just saved a lot of people a lot of headaches (and loud use of multiple BAD WORDS that scare cats, dogs and smaller children).
Cheers,
Bill

Hey Tom,
thanks a lot for the hint. Some of my older software won't install from disc any more. Reason is that the Win upd disables a driver called secdrv. You can manually invert the process by doing the following:
Go to Start, enter cmd (with admin rights), enter the following:
1) "Arm" and "activate" secdrv at once by entering sc config secdrv start=auto . The driver will then be automatically started at startup which MS does not advice.
2) "Arm" the driver by entering sc config secdrv start= demand . This will load it when needed. To load it directly enter sc start secdrv . If the upcoming log contains the line "4 RUNNING" you can go on.
Deactivate the driver with sc stop secdrv (single time) or sc config secdrv start= disabled (by default) if needed.
Best regards, paulopp

By pure coincidence over the past couple of days I have been attempting to install FS9 on my 'new' FSX dedicated rig. (It will be CalClassics all the way!) Anyway, FS9 installed ok via the 4 CDs, but then nothing when attempting to load. I have been ALL over the 'net trying various tips (I have Win7) and everything indicated it will work. But it would not. So, over to CalClassics and BOOM, there is the answer. What made the difference was renaming the exe and replacing. (Maybe that should be academic, but it was NEVER mentioned in other web sites.) Anyway, in short, because of this update, an installation of FS9 will 'fail' until the three steps you outlined are completed.

Hi Tom,
Thank you so much. I have been de-installing and re-installing FS9 several times in the last few days in order to fix the problem that FS9 suddenly did not start anymore. I played around with about every variable I could find. Changing CD drives and I don't know what. I even thought my PC was dying. I am so glad to find the solution here. Isn't it "strange" that Microsoft suddenly prevents you from using Microsoft software. The only way to continue using it is relaying on a patch to circumvent their own anti-piracy measures.
But anyway, I am so glad it works again. Big thanks.

This worked!!! You saved me a lot of grief. Thank you!
I have tried all of the other ways to fix my issue but nothing was working. I went to the Microsoft website and did their 10+ checklist of what could be the issue but to no avail. Went to other forms but still no joy. I went through rebooting the program several times thinking that I could do something differently, nope. Then, I wondered if it had something to do with an update patch to Windows or some other program within the PC that wasn't allowing the program to run.
So, I did another search on google and found this forum. What is even better about doing it this way is that I don't have to worry about the #4 CD being in the drive to make the game work. This has made it more convenient to play.
Thanks a lot Tom!!!

Ok, I have bad news and good news.
Bad news: After installing both the update and no-cd-patch, I can't get any of my add-on/downloaded items like an add-on aircraft to work. The game does load up just fine and works well, but the add-on stuff will not load and will also make the game crash.
Good news: I did uninstall and re-install FS2004. Then I went into the windows update center and searched for the update titled "KB3086255" and uninstalled it. This made the game work under its original CD programing. This still is inconvenient to load it from the CD state, but I need the add-on planes for educational purposes.
Hope this helps everyone and elevates any headaches for anyone.
Good luck!

I am pretty confident that this procedure will let you run FS2004 under Windows 10. It works perfectly for me, hope it does for you. Right, here goes........... Not wanting to be beaten by Microsoft and loose my sim and addons, I have come up with a work around. It's long, time consuming and complicated, but it works. Fit a spare hard drive to the Windows 10 PC and disconnect the Windows 10 drive. Install Windows 7 on the spare hard drive. XP will probably work too, but I had no XP drivers for my graphics card. Install FS2004 and run it. Install the No-CD patch from flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/15244/microsoft-flight-simulator-2004-v91-no-cd-patch/ Basically, download, rename FS9.exe to FS9_old.exe Paste the downloaded FS9.exe in place of the original. Run FS2004 to confirm that it not longer require Disc 4 to run. Install all your addons, one by one, running FS2004 after each install. Shut down the PC. Re-connect the Windows 10 hard drive and boot into Windows 10. In Windows 10, find the Flight Simulator 9 folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games Rename it Flight Simulator 9 old Find and copy the Flight Simulator 9 folder from the Windows 7 hard drive, then paste it into the above folder on Windows 10. Takes about 40 mins to complete. Run FS2004 on Windows 10, if you've done it right, you now have FS2004 working under Windows 10. It really works, as I just done a quick take off landing of the Lancaster from Blackpool Airport. Hope this might help someone else if they ask .
