With FSX-SE going so cheaply recently, I thought I should pay heed to all the commercial developers that are so keen I come out of the dark ages and give it a try. Of course they are keen that I should do so because to get it to work to the same standards I will probably need to invest a bit of money in utilities and add-ons and I need to be sure that is the direction I want to go before doing so. I am a bit old to learn new things and it may just never get used but I have tried a few things without luck and would appreciate some advice. I do not want this to turn into the usual (and tedious) "which is best" argument but would appreciate advice on the following hurdles I have already come across. - I have no interest in most of the default aircraft so tried installing the CC DC-7. I found several gauges missing. I also found my nose rubbing on the runway in terms of forward view. Are these issues specifically with FSX-SE - i.e. are CC aircraft not compatible with this version?
- I then tried the default DC-3. I doubt if I will ever be wooed away from the non-VC panels and I encountered an issue here - you can "raise" the seat to see the runway to taxi but if you change to side view to (critically) look around it reverts to original view and has to be cranked up again. From what I can read there is no fix for this as designed (pretty appalling, in my view) but are there any unofficial mods for this?
Maybe more questions in due course but that will do for now. Thanks, John

Hi,
You need to set up your outside view using my FSX Simulation Control Interface Mini-tutorial on the Tutorials page. It's a simple cfg file tweak which will fix the outside view in the DC-7 and other aircraft.
The view system in FSX has changed, and you cannot expect to use FS9 methods. If you want to have a specific view, you need to set up Camera Definitions in the aircraft.cfg file, and then use those instead of the default one. I have made such a definition for many of my aircraft (CalClassic VC View) which does fix one annoyance. It's mentioned in the FSX tutorial I mentioned above.
Hope this helps,

You mean when I could purchase a game, take it home install it on my computer, and use it without steam interfering?
Those dark ages?

You either love them or hate them and you can guess where I stand. Best regards, John

I am afraid I don't see a solution in that tutorial for retaining the "raised seat" position in non-VC view when looking around, so is the answer to that question a simple "no"?
Nor do I see any suggestions on how to fix the missing gauges.

I'm using FSX SE and for the gauges issue, I use FS Panel Studio to replace missing gauges with similar ones that will work in FSX.
On the DC-7, one of the guys I fly online with mentioned that he couldn't seem to get it to work in FSX. I hadn't tried it yet so yesterday morning, I set out to see what I could do with it.
Just copying it over resulted in a gauge error when I tried to load it. The message said the supercharger gauge was an issue. I them remembered that Tom had said it would be an issue. My preferred DC-7 in FS9 was the PAA 7B with the saddle tanks. And what I had there was a mix and match of bits pieces some of which were a few generations ago. At this point I figured it would be best in FSX to just start from scratch with the latest and greatest version and just include my favorite paints from FS9 in the new version.
Downloaded them from here and set to work. Tom has included instructions in the panel download for FSX installation along with a few bits and bobs to make it all work. (I'll be the first to admit that following instructions is not included in my usual methods). I got it all installed and for the most part it was working great. The only issue was the glass was pitch black from the outside view. I went into several aircraft folders that I had installed and working in FSX and found a glass texture without the _l or a spec texture (Milton Shupe's C-1A Trader), renamed it to match the one in the -7 files and it works great now. And all the gauges work.
Me being me and without the ability to leave anything as I found it, I converted all the textures to dds DXT5, set up the DC-7 with a common texture folder with texture.cfg files in each individual liveries folder along with only the textures required for that livery.
Late last night I installed the DC-7F and did the same to it.

Thanks, that should make life easier. I'm using FSX SE and for the gauges issue, I use FS Panel Studio to replace missing gauges with similar ones that will work in FSX. Thanks. I have been waiting a week for Flight1 to give me a replacement registration code so I can upgrade to the FSX version - maybe as I bought it many years back they want me to buy it again. If I can get that running, I shall be able to solve a lot of problems although not the key one concerning raising the seat which actually bothers me a lot because real pilots look around as they taxi without their seat dropping with a big thump! Best regards, John

John, in FS Panel Studio, go to options/FS Mode and Root Directory. That will give you a pop up screen for use with FS98 through FSX and CFS & CFS 2. I've had mine for years and years and it has the FSX option. I used it for the first panel version of the CalClassic C-46, which has been how long ago?

Hi,
I don't know of a way to retain a custom view angle, without making it the default view. This is unwise in my planes, because FSAviator has designed the view to be correct. You shouldn't need to raise the seat with those, once you make the cfg file change.

Believe it or not, the version I have does not have an FSX option which is why I am trying to upgrade. I believe I am entitled to but am getting nowhere at present. I will write to them again when I have time. I don't know of a way to retain a custom view angle, without making it the default view. Thanks, Tom, I will try this again when I have other things organised. Thanks for all your help. John
