Cyprus 1962 scenery now available.

Hi all,

I just finished a classic 1962 scenery package for Cyprus. The airports included are:

1. LCNC Nicosia. Custom detailed airport. A joint RAF/civillian airport until 1966. A new terminal was built in 1968. Airport was abandoned in 1974 due to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Today it remains in a "no man's land" and is used by UN peacekeeping forces.

2. LCRA RAF Akrotiri. An RAF air base opened in 1955. The main RAF base on Cyprus.

3. CX00 RAF Kingsfield. A minor RAF air base in East Cyprus opened in the late 1950s.

4. LC0A RAF Lakatamia. A world war 2 RAF base closed in the late 1940s.

5. LCLK RAF Larnaca. A world war 2 RAF base closed in the late 1940s and during the 1950s and 1960s used a gunnery range. After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Larnaca became the main airport in the Republic of Cyprus.

6. LCPH RAF Pafos. A world war 2 RAF base closed in the late 1940s. A new civillian airport was built in 2008 and is now the second most important airport in the Republic of Cyprus.

7. LCEN RAF Tymbou. A world war 2 RAF base closed in the late 1940s.

8. LCGK Gecitkale. A Turkish airbase in Northern Cyprus constructed in 1990 (removed in this scenery).

It is available for download on Tom's temporary link. If no major problems are found, then I will upload to Flightsim later on.

Nicosia was a joint RAF and civilian use airport. The RAF moved completely from Nicosia to Akrotiri in 1966.  A new terminal was built in Nicosia in 1968. Here is the old terminal used until 1968:

I have also include a modified AFCAD for Ian Elliot's RAF Luqa (LMML Malta) scenery which better accommodates our classic AI.  I have also included Instant scenery bgl files for ramp objects, lights, people, etc. for those who are using his scenery.  As always, be sure to back up any files you overwrite in case you wish to go back.

Thank you, as always, for this. The new Luqa looks terrific. However, using FS Global 2008 World Mesh, which is at the top of my scenery layers as they recommend and has not caused other issues, parts of Nicosia Runway 32 are buried under high ground. No problem if there is nothing to be done about this.

Try adding this file to the Addon Scenery/Cyprus 1962/scenery folder. It contains a flatten area under the runways.

A couple pics of Ian Elliot's RAF Luqa (LMML Malta) scenery using the optional bgl files in the Cyprus 1962 scenery. You'll have to install these files into the actual RAF Luqa scenery.  Some will overwrite files, be sure to back up any original files first!

Skyways of London had a "Crusader Service from London Heathrow to Tunis, Malta, and Cyprus using Hermes earlier on, and then L-749s.  Be sure to install Mike Schneider's classic Tunis scenery and then you can fly this entire flight using vintage scenery!

There is, of course, a Skyways paint of the Connie Team's L749 available, but information on their use seems difficult to come by. The BEA timetable for July-October 1961 (pp.28-29) lists the Skyways Hermes flights as operated in conjunction with BEA. Skyways 101 left Heathrow at 21:00 on Tues and Thursdays, arrived at Tunis at 02:30, left there at 03:30 and was due in Malta at 05:10. Skyways 102 departed Malta at 06:40, scheduled arrival at Tunis was 08:20 and departure 09:20, with scheduled arrival at Heathrow 14:55. There is no mention of Nicosia. Any information on the Connie flights would be most welcome.

I have never found a schedule of the Connie flights to Nicosia, only the Hermes. My March 1960 OAG has the following schedule:

A Connie schedule I can find is from a July, 1962 OAG, which lists only a London-Malta nonstop flight.

A little more info from my British Independent Airlines book. Excerpts:

London-Malta-Nicosia service began with Yorks on Nov. 11th, 1953. By the end of 1954 the Hermes replaced the York on this service. The Hermes were sold to Air Safaris in March, 1961. The 1962 season used Constellations on the scheduled services to Cyprus, Malta, and Tunis. These schedules were finally closed down in April 1964.

This is very helpful indeed, many thanks Tom. I can now do the Skyways Constellation flight to Malta on a proper basis. From what I have read about Skyways they were quite a major operator, but mainly on charter flights, and the details of these are now difficult to recover. However, there is useful information on the Skyways Connies with photographs at the following link and clicking on the Construction Number links provides further details:

Skyways offered low cost "air coach" fares to its European destinations. Interesting to note, that for some reason it was prohibited from offering these same low cost "air coach" fares on its Crusader Service to Tunis, Malta and Cyprus. (BEA, BOAC, the British Government or somebody???) forced them to charge the full normal cost coach fare - but only on that one flight.

I forgot to mention that some of the ground equipment I placed in Malta is dependent upon the Cyprus scenery. If Cyprus is not an active scenery later, then some objects in Malta (air stairs and luggage conveyors) will not show up. Likewise, there is a communications building and tower in Nicosia that will not show up if RAF Luqua (Malta) is not an active scenery layer. I figured that anybody who wants to fly to Cyprus would also want to have Malta active...and vice versa.

Hi Mike,
The Skyways flights to Malta and Cyprus where actually low fare flights,the return fare to Cyprus in 1953 being £33 cheaper than what BEA was charging.
The return fare on BEA being £108 and Skyways £75.
These flights where flown under the Colonial Coach scheme,flights between the UK and its colonies and possessions ,making them effectively domestic flights.
Hunting Clan and Airwork also used Colonial Coach to East and West Africa.
