For FSX (I'm using SE) would it be best to convert the scenery textures to .dds vice .bmp/.af/.. etc? I'm trying to decide if any improvements would be worth the effort. The core library would take a day or two if I was to sit down and keep at it. Then there's the individual scenery textures for each airport.
Or am I getting a bit too OCD with this?

Too OCD. BMP is just fine.

Yesterday, I was checking out HEAX in Africa 1960 (our online flight group is getting ready to go "Afrika Korps" for our next nightly flights) and it had some serious issues with the trees. The trees themselves look fine, but the rest of the texture squares were making everything behind them invisible. I was using the FSX conversion modded Core pack. I kept the trees on the back burner while looking for something else and saw the P3D version in .dds format and figured I'd give that a shot in FSX SE. Solved the tree issue and I now have buildings there that weren't there before. I'm now sold on converting the scenery textures to .dds. Once I get the few that I do have installed converted, I'll convert them as I install them.
My line of thinking is that in FSX SE, dds textures are more important, especially if they have an alpha layer to them.

I decided that the old bmp textures are fine if they work. If not, I have DXT/Bmp and paint.net with which I can fix most texture issues that bug me.
I've ran into a few more places that will need some more tweaking. I've got some of the same alpha issues on Fremont St in Vegas (the cowboy for one) and some of the signs and a building or two are are in the middle of the road going down the strip (I think the Sands is the main miscreant there). The alpha issues are an easy fix with DXT/Bmp. I only checked 1959 there which left McCarren pretty barren. I'm going to switch it to 1963 and see if it works better. In my old FS9 install, I believe that I used 63 in Vegas. I'm thinking I might could move the stuff out of the highway with a scenery program. At least I hope I can. I hate dodging signs at over 200kias flying down the strip.
One of the Florida airports (I think the one in Jacksonville or maybe St Pete) has trees all over the gate and ramp area. Enough so that I couldn't taxi in front of the gates. Might have to see what I can do with the ol' Exclude "chainsaw".
And with the AI aircraft, the main thing has been the prop blurs which I've been replacing with ones in my aircraft parts folder when I get tired of installing and checking scenery out. But overall, I'm impressed with how well the Propliner retro scenery is working in FSX. I've got probably a couple dozen or so AI Howard 500s that I'm thinking to eventually add to the AI traffic as executive business aircraft for the period. They worked out quite well in FS9 as replacements for the Learjets.
