@ Tom and anyone else who likes fishing, For the information to readers outside the UK, here in the UK before you are allowed to fish you have to have a license, you can obtain one either from the post office or on line. www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/fish/399730/?lang=_eYou can fish without a license but if you get caught you can face a very heavy fine, anything up to £2.500, though some still take that chance. My question is do any of you lads who fish in your country need such a license?

Most definitly so here in the US! It's fun isn't it? So let's tax it, which a licensing fee is nothing but. Being only an occasional "weekend angler", my knowledge of what's required is suspect, but I do believe that, here in the state of Pennsylvania, one also needs extra stamps to fish for trout, bass, muskies and other game fish. I could be mistaken, however.

The licence fee we pay in the UK goes to the Environment Agency, that do good things though. For example they test water courses for pollution and if found track the sauce, and then stop the pollution, the causer of the pollution can then get a fine. They have cleaned up a lot of rivers that one time were dead, now they are thriving again with fish, wildlife and plants etc. Some begrudge paying the licence but they still want the benefit of some good fishing.

The above was said with tongue in cheek and was in no way meant to be political. I know that taxes are necessary. The license fees we pay are used in much the same way here and I, for one, have no problems at all with paying it.
However, if I may rant for a bit. I cannot for the life of me understand some "sportsmen". They carry their gear in with them, including lunch and certain beverages. However, when it comes time to leave, their garbage stays behind!! And they want to be treated like adults?? 'nuff said!

Oh it's okay Tom, I wasn't having a go back at you, I was just saying what the fee is used for, no harm meant I assure you.
Re: the litter, we get that too, a lot of angling clubs ban members if they get spotted doing this, many a time have I took someone else rubbish home to dispose of it properly.

Hi, We have a fishing license requirement here in California. The current cost is $39 per year. Since I only go fishing once a year and we only keep about 3 fish each, we call them "the most expensive fish in the world".

Colin,
My second post above was meant to put things in perspective re keeping politics out of the forum, that's all. I didn't think for a moment anything untoward was meant by your post.
Tom, $13 dollar fish? About market price in a lot of restaurants, but they don't have the ambiance of a good trout stream!!

New mwmbwe here. Name is Rob and I am in Western Kentucky. I am disabled so I get a reduced price fishing license. It cost me $5.00 per year and believe I use it a lot. Love to spen the night on the bank of the Green River with several poles in the water. Chanel Catfish are some of the best tasting fish on this earth. And when you hook into one if it is any size you have a great fight.

Hello rob and welcome by the way, I saw a program on TV where they were catching the Catfish, wow some of them are monsters, and to hook one must be a great thrill.
You say you are disabled, most if not all angling clubs here in the UK do cater for disabled anglers, the clubs make easy access points and have stages/platforms specially made etc.
We also have what we call 'Fisheries" commercial lakes specially made and stocked with fish, they charge a daily rate to fish on them. Some angling clubs book them for a fishing match, do you have fishing matches where you live?
