First off, I would like to sing the praises of Active Sky Next..wonderful addon, wonderful. Aside from the weather generation of accurate conditions outside, there are several very useful tweaking of options that are great for me. The foremost of these is in the Visibility section, and there I can set the minimum surface visibility to never, ever hear that dreaded "airport is IFR, request denied" when I try to land somewhere.
Now, the question. Currently, I have that option set for 10 SM, but I wonder, at what number of statute miles, does an airport become IFR only? I know the FAA minimums is at 3, but what does FS say about it? I would like to set my minimums at that, plus 1, so I do have a few low visibility approaches without having to file an IFR flight plan. THis way, I can ignore 90% of ATC interaction during my flight. I take off, with ATC permission, fly beyond that airport's airspace and not have to deal with default ATC until I get within 20 NMs of my destination, then get permission to land. This way, I can have real world weather going, and never be denied landing anywhere because the visibility is too low.
