Yes, PSA was pretty cheap. When I flew to college in LA from Sacramento in the 70s and 80s I first flew PSA quite a bit. I remember the “coffee, tea, or punch”. But when I realized that Western was now charging the same price for reserved seats, first class legroom, and free champagne, it didn’t take rocket science to figure that one out. I remember taking the last flight of the day around 10:30 pm out of Sacto and seeing the people already lining up for the PSA midnight flyer at the next gate over (no guaranteed seat out of Sacto). It was an odd mixture of students, hippies, and senior citizens. Lots of backpacks, guitars, and colorful but ragged clothes. They were going to be in that line for an hour or so to ensure they got a seat. I boarded my Western flight, happy to pay the few dollars more for the comfort and convenience. Each to his own...
