This ugly aircraft is known as SNCAO ACA-5. The project was proposed in 1939 by an engineer named Kolko to the French Air Ministry respectively to the aircraft manufacturer SCNAO (Société Nationale de Construction Aéronautique de l'Ouest). However windcanal tests on a model revealed that stability was poor and that claimed performance was doubtfull. Finally the project was rejected. Brought to light 1978 in an issue of the French "Aviation Magazine" it was believed by readers to be an April's fool joke (it was the April issue). Then Aviation Magazine had to a more detailed article in the following issue. Bernard

Wow, that's right up there for the award. As they said back then, what looks good flies good.

Makes you wonder how anyone could design something like that and what could you use it for. Decent sort of target for enemy fighter aircraft as well.

Definitely looks like it was designed for target practice, that's for sure. Not too sure the pilot would go along with that though. Regards, Phil

The main principle was to keep the concept compact by placing all elements of the construction as close to the center of gravitity as possible, while still retaining a great movability.

Of course that is the principle behind modern aircraft - less stability means more maneuverability. But we now have computers that can make that practicable.

That cockpit area explains a lot.
