Hello all, This just an observation, not a niggle, because to me Calclassics is simply the most wonderful resource. I have Pacific Northwest scenery installed. Trying to recreate a 1957 United flight Seattle-Portland-Chicago, my poorly executed approach to runway 10L was further thrown into disarray by discovering, despite the runway markings, the runway heading is 120 deg. Is this just a mistake in the scenery, or are other factors at work?
All the best

Hi,
I just went to Runway 10L and the magnetic heading is 101. Since there is a 19 degree magnetic variation at PDX, I would assume that your instruments are reading true headings instead of magnetic. This is usually due to FS not reading the default magdec.bgl file correctly. Some have found that placing this BGL file into its own folder/scenery folder and placing it at the top of the Scenery Library listing sometimes fixes such problems. Worth a try?

Yes, it fixes the problem if another scenery has modified it (badly) and placed its own version in another scenery layer. Or locate the modification and oik it out. Best regards, John

I just moved my file as Tom suggested and it is being read now. Didn't even know that I had a problem until I read this thread. Live and learn.

For good measure I have copied my magdec.bgl in an addon scenery folder called "Magdec". I added it just the same as any addon scenery, and it sits at the top of my scenery library list. It does no harm to be there. I found that FS sometimes would read magnetic correctly, and then at other times it wouldn't. It seemed to have a mind of its own, and had little to do with any addon scenery. It was a random occurrence for me. Anyway, this solves the issue once and for all.

FS2004/Scenery/BASE/scenery is the default location.

Thanks Tom, thanks everyone else, moving magdec.bgl to the top of the scenery library did the trick. I hadn't loaded any new scenery for some time, and the problem wasn't apparent until two days ago. You are right FS does seem to have a mind of its' own, being a shaman could be a help at times! Cheers.

One other thing. If you create a new addon scenery later called MAGDEC, make sure you ONLY have a scenery folder inside it, where you will put your magdec.bgl file. Do not create a texture folder. Just have the scenery folder only inside the main MAGDEC addon scenery layer. I have heard, that if you have an empty texture folder, that it will cause a memory leak, and FS will slow down and crash.

Well this explains a lot... Since I live right under the approach to KPDX, I now know why the House seem always off kilter... Take Care, Stefan
