The Opel RAK.1 was the world's first purpose-built rocket-powered aircraft. It was designed and built by Julius Hatry under commission from Fritz von Opel who flew it in September 1929 at Rebstock Airfield near Frankfurt am Main, the early city airport. Fritz von Opel was a grandson of Adam Opel, founder of the well known German Opel automobile manufacturer. He is remembered mostly for his spectacular demonstrations of rocket propulsion that earned him the nickname "Rocket Fritz" In 1928, Opel built and test ran already a rocket-powered motorcycle called the Monster. The model is again one of the creations done by Dennis Simanaitis. Bernard

And that was the beginning...
Always been fascinated by the technical progress tempo during first half of the XX century. There were only about 30 years between this tiny thing and 7-Mach North American Х-15! Only fourty years between Wright Flyer and Lockheed Constellation. And so on and on. Looking back to the recent 30-40-50 years, those achievements were more than impressive!
Bernard, thanks for sharing this story.
Regards, Dan

As Dan says, the pace of (space) flight development has been breathtaking, especially in the early decades! And thanks for another interesting illustrated story Bernard. Glad to have you back, and what a re-entry it is. Erik
