Hi, Looks like it's the end for Berlin's Tegel airport, the jet airport in our era: airwaysmag.com

During the war, it was a marshy field where they tested rockets. I assume not the actual huge rockets, but smaller ones trying to develop designs and work out bugs.
I also read the main reason that Air France moved there was because they were unhappy with the gate assignments at Templehof. They felt insulted that Pan Am and BEA got the closer, better gates. That "Pride of France" thing goin' on, I guess...... I actually suspect the real reason is that they wanted to use Caravelles in and out of Berlin, and with the Caravelle's take off and landing requirements, Templehof was not considered safe. So with the ability to have longer runways, they moved to Tegel. Of course later on when Pan Am flew B-727s into Berlin, the superior take off and landing allowed them to easily use Templehof. That AA requirement that a B-727 be able to land and take off fully loaded at LaGuardia paid off over and over again in many ways!

Although traffic variety has degenerated to next to nothing but 737s, A320s and Q400s and traffic levels have dropped considerably in the past few months, the pain of not having its aircraft traffic over my part of town anymore will last quite a while. Spotting locations are also A+, be it on the entire roof of terminal A or on the noise protection wall near the end of 26R. Lots of people hate the terminals for being run down or improvised, but I know no other airport where you practically fall out of the bus into the boarding lounge, if the first stop wasn't the Currywurst shack outside next to the bus stop. Decentralized security checkpoints also made it impossible to set up one of those endless capitalist labyrinths aka duty free shopping centres with their grossly overpriced food courts and other BS.
Even the terminal at Schönefeld with its timeless 1970s eastern block charme, equally hated by all these ignorant Ryanjet flyers, is on borrowed time because the location is to be reused for a new-built government terminal soonish.
With the cube of shame with two runways that is Willy Brandt International at the cost of its classic airports, the city will lose yet more of its hodgepodge charm to become ultimately as bland and boring as any other capital metropolis on the planet.
What an utter shame.

The decentralized security was a big plus. Tegel has a nice provincial feel to it. No walking of endless corridors like in Frankfurt.

You can't have this at any other airport: It's basically all living history there. While looking for these photos, I found some snaps of Air Berlin jets from years ago. If you'll excuse me, I'll go have a cry in that corner over there for a bit.
