The domestic German night air mail started in 1961. 'The Deutsche Bundespost' has become, so to speak 'overnight' the largest customer of Lufthansa. It commissioned Lufthansa to set up a night airmail network that went into operation on the night of September 1st. First four Convair 440 Metropolitan and one Viscount 814 flew. Since these planes fly on regular scheduled service during the day, the seats are fitted with protective covers the length of the cabin - a procedure that night airmail has already given the name 'Flying Carpet Company'. The planes headed for Frankfurt as the center of the night flight network Monday through Friday. Half an hour after midnight, the Metropolitan from Nurnberg and the Viscount from Munich were the first to arrive there; At 0.45 am the Metropolitan follows from the direction of Hanover - Cologne / Bonn; five minutes later, the two Metropolitans from Hamburg and Bremen - Düsseldorf landed. Convair CV-440 at Nurnberg, at Hamburg Fulsbüttel, and at Bremen. Vickers Viscount 800 at Munich Riem For obvious reasons I forewent to do screenshots during their night flights! Bernard

Yes, it was an interesting operation. I know that Air France also had a night mail service using DC-3s and DC-4s, and I believe other countries did as well.

GREAT history explanations although I do not understand why this excellent thread post with great screenshots is not in screenshot subforum where it would be better suited. I guess the original poster made mistake posting it on wrong subforum? ? Regards, Aharon

The thread is more a story than just showing screenies. That's why I put them here.

it is very interesting to know how things were done with the post office in the past, a good system for the circumstances at the time, logistics has also developed rapidly with aircraft, trucks and ships, a very nice topic
