Hi,
Does a list exist somewhere with the most important airlines that were active in 1947? I looked for it on the net, but unsuccessfully. Thanks for any advice.

I don't have that information for 1947, but I do have a list of airlines in the 1951 OAG. But how important? I would consider airlines that have timetables in the main front section to be important to the USA. Those were:
Aer Lingus Aero Transportes SA Aerolineas Argentinas (FAMA) Aeronaves de Mexico Aerovias Brasil Aerovias Guest Aerovias Venezuela Europa AVENSA Air France Air India Intl Alaska Alaska Coastal All American Aloha (TPA) American Australian National AVIANCA Bonanza Braniff British Commonwealth (BCPA) BEA BOAC BWIA Canadian Pacific Capital Caribair Caribbean Intl Central Chicago and Southern Cubana Colonial Continental Cordova Delta Eastern El Al Ellis Empire Flying Tiger Frontier Hawaiian Lake Central LAMSA LANICA LANSA LAV Maritime Central Mexicana Mid-Continent Mid-West National Northeast Northern Consolidated Northwest Ozark Pacific Northern Pan American PANAGRA Panair do Brasil Philippine Piedmont Pioneer Q Airways Queen Charlotte Reeve Aleutian Robinson KLM SABENA SAS SAHSA Slick Southern Southwest Swissair TACA TAN Trans-Canada Trans-Texas TWA United UMCA West Coast Western Wien Wiggins Wisconsin Central

There are lots of airlines that were not included in the main section, including BSAA.

Thanks, that's already a quite extensive list. By 'important' I ment the airlines mostly seen at bigger airports. Two years after war it shouldn't be a proliferation of them in Europe and Asia. I intend to place some static aircraft at concerned airports to get some life there.

What I consider major airlines (i.e. owning lots of planes) but not listed in the main section are:
Aeroflot Aero O/Y Alitalia Ansett Cathay Pacific CSA DHY Turkey Iberia Indian National LAI LOT MEA Misr QANTAS REAL SAA TAE Greece TAP TEAL VARIG VASP
Keep in mind with all of these airlines I do not know which were present in 1947.

Thanks Tom for your added list. With all these informations it would be much easier to check with 'Vintage Airline Timetables' site.
