Shalom and greetings all my pals,
ORBX is having 50 percent sale on airport sceneries and YMEN Essendon is one of them. As I am sure all of you know that YMEN Essendon was original international airport for Melborune before YMMl Melbourne came into existence, I have question for all of you.
Does Orbx YMEN Essendon airport scenery look same or look match to YMEN Essendon during 1970 era jet years where 707s, DC-9s, 727s, and Electras were used on Essendon? Or should I be better off looking for freeware or payware historic YMEN Essendon scenery that fit the same year era where aircrafts already mentioned above roamed the skies?
This is for my FSX Deluxe with SP1 and SP2 set in Windows 10 Pro
Thanks,
Aharon

Just a correction, Essendon airport is in Melbourne, not Sydney. And it was the international airport in Melbourne before Tullamarine (now Melbourne Airport) was built and operational in 1970 to replace Essendon. Which was too small to handle 707’s. But it did have all those other types you mentioned. From Wikipedia :
A variety of aircraft were used through Essendon in the 1960s – Lockheed L-188 Electras; Vickers Viscounts; Fokker F27 Friendships; Douglas DC-3s, DC-4s, and DC-6s; de Havilland Comets, and from 1964, Boeing 727s. Douglas DC-9s were introduced later in the decade..
As far as orbx looking the same as the 50’s and 60’s, well, it kinda does today. I flew into Essendon once with an instructor once in a piper warrior. Walked through the old terminals. Deserted. Very 1960’s early 70’s feel. Not much had been updated around on the airport at all. Some new hangars, and a jet base or two. A very nostalgic feel to it overall. I had YMEN Orbx on an previous PC, and it looked great. But it’s more a ‘modern’ feel. The surroumding landscape, extra hangars the factory direct shopping complex on the edge of the airport, the jet base etc etc. It won’t feel like 1950’s/60’s/70’s with all that.
I also have the Calclassic Aussie airports and you can’t go wrong with the YMEN here.

My brain has NOT yet waken up!! My humblest apologies to all of you for very gross mistake. Yes yes I mean Melbourne. SORRY SORRY let me correct my original post Just a correction, Essendon airport was too small to handle 707’s. But it did have all those other types you mentioned. Strange I remember seeing photos of Air Force One 707 and some airline 707s at this airport?? Which version for Comet and would that be BOAC airline?? I flew into Essendon once with an instructor once in a piper warrior. Walked through the old terminals. That is AMAZING!!!! As far as orbx looking the same as the 50’s and 60’s, well, it kinda does today. Very 1960’s early 70’s feel. Not much had been updated around on the airport at all. A very nostalgic feel to it overall Very glad to hear that and your answer is VERY helpful in my purchase decision making. It is on sale for lousy eight bucks and I am thinking of it!!! I had YMEN Orbx on an previous PC, and it looked great. Do you think it will come into conflict with my ORBX YMMl Melbourne scenery please? I also have the Calclassic Aussie airports and you can’t go wrong with the YMEN here Is it set in year 1970 era used by aircrafts that I mentioned please?? Does it require any additional base files?? Thank you so much for very very informative answers and once again, please accept my apologies for my very groggy morning blues that resulted into wrong city name!! Gonna need lots of Earl Grey tea to wake my brain up!! Regards, Aharon

Haha all good. I'm a born and bred Victorian. A VERY good way to start a war saying a Melbourne icon is in Sydney! Yes I think initially. Pan Am flew into Essendon I believe. I'm thinking they may have all gone via Sydney first as many flights did. Perhaps the reason for wanting a bigger airport was more direct flights. Not sure which version, but I've seen images of the BOAC comet at YMEN. The landing wasn't amazing. I wasn't used to the wider runway compared to my home airport, and misjudged the height. Ouch. But yes, walking through very basic and very empty early 1970's style terminal was qute the treat. Well, cant go wrong with 8 bucks! And it does fit in with the YMML airport as well. No I think its 1959 era just by looking at it. And yes a few base files. Only way to get a late 60's, early 70's style is to hack away at the ORBX one but I think that would lend itself to more problems. The Calclassic is perhaps more suited to the prop era. I think you sue FSX right? This one looks basic, but it looks a little more like the 60's/70's time period with the terminal. I do like that time period as well which isn't always covered by scenery makers. Does Orbx YMEN scenery still have gate apron areas where 707s and historic airline jets used to park for dropping off and picking up passengers? Regards, Aharon

The only thing I would say with using the CC Essendon scenery is that it is pretty crowded if you use later schedules - 1970 has been mentioned? My era is set at 1967, and I had to create extra gates to enable me to have somewhere to park on arrival.
You have got me thinking with the ORBX scenery - I wouldn't have thought it would cause any issues modifying it if you keep your changes in a separate, higher, level.

The easiest option is to install the free one from here, and see what you think. The orbx one will look great though. Only the modern parts of it may ruin the retro feel you’re after. Although if you have plenty of AI from that era, it might work ok.

Thanks all for more kind answers.
I am still thinking about ORBX YMEN scenery. Meanwhile I am definitely planning to buy ORBX PAJN Juneau, YBCS Cairns, and YSCB Canberra airport sceneries for 50 percent off.

Aharon

Did lots of investigations and found out that Comets, VC-10, and 707s were used at YMEN Essendon airport.
Found photo proofs of Qaantas 707s and BOAC Comets at YMEM but cannot find photo proof of VC-10s and other airline 707s

Aharon

I'm guessing most likely the 707's and other long haul flights came in via SYD,PER and/or BNE. Back then, even into the mid 70's, if not later, SYD was the main hub. Check out the Qantas routes here from 1974 : www.routesonline.com/news/38/airlineroute/261609/1974-qantas-network/Even with the 747, not too many - or any - international flights direct out of Melbourne. Except to NZ, but I'm not sure that accounts for anything.
