Do you think you can touch down on a road or avenue or street and take off in FSX or P3D or MS2020 like this video (see the aircraft doing its own pushback on a road)

The Air Force did the same thing last month in Michigan, while playing War Games. They do that to simulate NATO Countries. I saw the photos of the A-10 Warthogs Lined-up on the County Hwy, with white birch trees on both sides. Cool shots. Stefan

You may need to turn off crash detection, but yes, it can be done, at least in FSX.

As many others, the Swiss Air Forces used highways as alternative runway strips. It did several landing excerices from beginning Seventies to the Eigthies until car traffic became too intensive. One of the spots was a part of the highway N1 connecting Zurich to Geneva. This and other strips where also used with Hawker Hunter and Northrop F-5 Tiger. I once created such a scenery with some Venoms (before taxiway lines became white!) Frankly speaking, I really don´t see any reasons to switch to newer FS versions, when such simple 'gimmicks' won't be possible any more. And IMO that's rather pitty, Bernard

I read recently that one mile out of every five of U.S. interstate highways are designed to be straight so they can be used as runways during war or natural disasters.

I read recently that one mile out of every five of U.S. interstate highways are designed to be straight so they can be used as runways during war or natural disasters. I heard that too, was taught that in grade school, but checked and it seems that is a long standing myth. There is no stipulation for straight sections every 5 miles. There are areas where a highway, not always an interstate either, is long enough and flat enough to support emergency aircraft operations.
