The Lufthansa timetable of 1958 lists cargo flights between Frankfurt and New York using a DC-4 (LH 040 and LH 041). The timetables don't indicate an intermediate stop but there must surely have been one? Which route would they have flown and where would they have refueled?

They probably took different routes depending on the weather and the pressure patterns. Common stops were Prestwick, Manchester, Shannon, Reykjavik, Gander, and Goose Bay. They could have even used Harmon, featured in a recent thread. I believe that DC-4 was leased from a cargo outfit, apparently Transocean:
