The following youtube treats the developments of the Soviet Il-12 and Il-14. It's particular interesting as it shows the very first Il-12. The original project involved a four-engine aircraft with a pressurized cabin for up to 29 passengers and modified M-88 radial engines. Yea, an odd looking aircraft, to be the first IL-18. The IL-12 and 14 were not pressurized.

Here a picture: Strangly it has been published as Ilyusin I)l-18 (1946) by Wikipedia. Others show it as Il-16. Anyway, an other curious aircraft was this Tu-70: But it seems that than Aeroflot had no requirement for such an aircraft ... Bernard

The first photo shows a prototype of the Il-18 - four-engine piston aircraft. The second photo shows the Tu-70, a passenger version of the Tu-4, a clone of the USAF B-29. Both are made in a single copy. No passengers were carried.

An interesting bit is that the final IL-18 had a very similar bullet nose to the piston version (which was not really a prototype, but was an unsuccessful airliner design from 1946), but then Ilyushin grafted on an unpressurized nose section containing the nose gear and the radar dish. The dividing line can be clearly seen in photos.
The original IL-18 and Tu-70 were not successful because Aeroflot considered them too large for the current passenger loads.
