For the recorded sound on itself, made with a good stereo microphone setup, this video is outstanding on its own. A hi-fi rendition on the receiving end is worthwile here Cheers Wolfgang

Steam locomotive sound is always so impressive, I'm sure that's a big reason why people bemoaned its loss...

And now the time when "internal combustion is king" is probably ending soon...

Hi,
the steam era isn't over and won't be over for a long time to go. Nuclear power stations, coal/oil/gas fired power stations, geothermal power plants, as well as the "always 20 year away" nuclear fission reactors, need steam to produce the more and more needed electrical energy, via steam-turbines.
I won't say anything about the battery powered electric car....
Cheers Wolfgang

Round engines and steam locomotives --- What more is there? Here's what's more there is to love - a steam powered airplane! The Besler Brothers developed steam engines for powering aircraft. They predicted it would replace radial internal combustion engines. The pilot serves as an engineer and the co-pilot serves as the fireman.
Imagine the thrill of seeing a Boeing 377 Steamocruiser coming on from London with steam pouring out from all four engines, the smell of that coal smoke, the grease and oil, and the chuff-chuff-chuff of the airpump! Listen to that triple chime steam whistle on final approach warning all the clear the runway!
Here you can see the Besler Brothers flying a steam plane. Look at that steam exhaust at 1:10!

Aerofoto that image reminds me of when we were kids in the late 1950's. In the hot summertime we used to grab handfuls of dirt and run around with our arms swept back releasing the dirt to simulate the smoke of the new jetliners. Those were the days.

Classic "water/methanol injection" .... to increase the density of air passing through the engines (it also hd the additional effect of cooling the fan blades to) result in a roughly 7* power boost for each engine .... albeit with copious quantities of sooty black exhaust smoke and a hell of a lot "NOISE" Funny you should mention that because we used to do the same too and around the same period If the fields and grass were damp it made pretended TO's and landings somewhat interesting .... to the extent one could end up slipping and sliding and experiencing the bewildering sensation of going forwards, backwards, upside down, and sideways virtually all at once .... then facing the inevitable court of inquiry upon returning home (mum and dad) with torn clothing covered in mud and either bruised or bleeding (often both) knees and elbows as a consequence of the accident one had just suffered.
