8-)For my New Year's day flight, I am going to re-create the cross country flight we used to make in our old USAF C-47 when we made flight check runs to evaluate our USAF facilities. I am, however not using todays VOR/GPS but will use the old colored airways system;with the Adcock radio range system; and in this case it will be from California using Amber down to Dagget and then pick up Green Four and Green Five on across to Washington, DC. Will probably RON at several USAF bases during the trip just like in the old days. First RON will be at Davis-Monthan in Tucson, then to Biggs in El Paso and to Carswell AFB, Fort Worth. Jesse

I dare say there aren't a dozen people on here who remember those days of air navigation facilities. Colored Airways and Beacons were on there way out even when I started. But I got a good dose of Range flying. That might've been the start of my hearing loss; listening to all the dots and dashes in the headset. What a way to navigate, huh?!?! Range approaches were always interesting too. VORs sure changed things.
Happy New Year !!

Since I am the Elder, I'll say welcome to the club. I'll join you in that hearing loss category. My last audiogram shows a 52% loss in the left ear and a 51% loss in the right. I have tried hearing aids but I find that all they do is amplify the noise and I would much rather not have that.
VORs took out all the pleasure of working out problems that were associated with the old Adcock. It was fun working out Average Bisectors to determine where you were. It was suicide if you were lost and tried to assume where you were.
