I'm a bit rusty guys sorry about this, I want to install Cal Classics again and I have a couple of questions first.
I intend to get one of those external hard drives (500GB), can I install FS on to it and if so will it run OK?
Also if I read it correctly there are a few updates to Cal Classics, what do I need to do first please? ???

Hi Colin! Yes, you can! The golden rule is that Windows will call FS9 to the last install of the program! So, if you want to install FS9 in your computer and another version on an external Hard Drive, you should start with external first, then whaen installing fs into your internal drive, the registry will be changed by the setup program to reflect the new install. So you can plug the externl and access fs9 without conflicting with the internal! If you want to have 2 "Flight Simulator Files" folders to reflect your different installations, you can use the FSSW Language.dll trick! It is just a small file available at the Old Hangar that will make yuor second install to see itself as "Silver Wings". You just need to rename FS9.EXE to Silver Wings.EXE and a second folder on "My Documents" will appear with the title "Silver Wings Files". Also Windows will see 2 different programs, so no conflict! Soft landings!

Thanks Rav,
I think I follow, I did have seperate installs on my notebook PC, but as you say it will run any installs from the external drive. So if I read correctly, I need to install FS first on the external, then any others on the internal, so now I need to uninstall the one I've already got on the internal?

Hi,
I'm not exactly sure what you are wanting here. If you want the registry to point to the external drive's FS, then just install it there.
If you want the registry to point to the one already installed on the internal drive, the easiest thing to do is:
1. Install FS on the external drive. 2. Use the Flight 1 Registry reset utility to point it back to the internal FS copy.
Hope this helps,

Hi Tom,
If say I had a clean install of FS in the internal, and I want Cal Classics and/or any other modified version on the external, I just wondered if it would run, it seems it does so I don't suppose there is a problem.
I havn't got the external yet, but may be tomorrow, I was making sure first.

I just had a look at some external hard drives, in doing so came across something someone had written. I was going for an external for ease of installation but after reading this article I have changed my mind. I should have thought of this I know, but apparently having external drives is OK for storage but internal drives do run a lot faster, something to do with the interface. The internal is IDE where as the external is either USB or Fire Wire which is slower access, so I'm thinking if I run FS from the external am I going to get stutters etc? I think I'll go for the internal drive instead, I have fitted them before so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

One of those days. I went to the PC shop, it wasn't open, forgetting it was Sunday it doesn't open till 11.00, it was 09.55 so off I went home again. Went back at 11.00 looked at the hard drives then spotted they are either SATA or PATA, I asked what the difference is, something to do with the connection (pins) I had no idea what mine was, so off home again. I looked at the make/model of my hard drive, typed in the serial # and I found out it was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA. Now I'm thinking, do I really need another hard drive, after all I've installed FS and a Submarine sim plus my word processor and a few other programs and still got loads of room on my 500Gb drive? So now I'm thinking perhaps I'll wait.

Hi,
Mine is all one big partition, and I have several FS installations on it (FS2002 and two FS2004). Works fine.
Hope this helps,
