For those that are fans of the Twin Beech civil and military series there is a new release with major modifications to an already great version.
This is a full FSX Acceleration SDK compliant version of the Beechcraft D18S originally produced by Milton Shupe and Scott Thomas and is provided with their permission. All of the operating features of the original and more are included in the new FSX models. The FSX stand alone package, including an installer, is by Dave Carroll. The file was posted 6/2/10 at Flightsim.com as b18dc05.zip.
The structural changes to the gmax model (from the FS9 version) were:
* addition of animated nose compartment,
* addition of animated left aileron tab,
* smoothing of housings and wing leading edge intakes,
* 1945 period cowlings and addition of navigators turret to the SNB-2C Navigator model.
FS9:
* All deicer boots were made optional (textured). D18s, C45s and SNBs display many deicer boot configurations.
* Horizontal stabilizer set -2 degrees incidence per specifications (Paul Matt drawings),improving the stab - fuselage joint.
* Cowl vent added to outboard upper quarter of engine cowlings. Later D18S, C45 and SNB aircraft display this feature. Lower half of engine cowlings and cowl flaps modified.
* Nacelle through structure removed and wheel wells added.
* Tail cone modified and fairing half added to elevator.
* Fuselage-Wing joint modified.
* Animated pilot added - copyright by Microsoft.
New wire frame textures were produced as 2048 X 2048 bitmaps with a scale of 80 pixels per foot (aircraft dimensions) and mapped in gmax using "Unwrap UVW". gmax is not constrained to 1024 X 1024 bitmaps and scales the bitmap to match the wire frame position. The 2048 X 2048 bitmap allows very precise matching of each vertex with the corresponding wire frame intersection on the bitmap.
In the case of the fuselage, at 80 pixels/foot, one bitmap is insufficient to cover the entire fuselage so the fuselage must be divided - main and tail. This produces a discontinuity in the smoothed model. The discontinuity was corrected by rejoining main and tail after texture mapping and re-smoothing. Before and after models were saved in case later modifications are required. This technique allows mapping a very large continuous structure to several high resolution bitmaps.
FSX:
*All materials changed to comply with the FSX Acceleration SDK.
*All animations changed to key frame and tagged, left aileron trim tab and nose animation added.
*Attach points added for landing and navigation lights.
*Exterior and Interior models for D18S/SNB-5 and for SNB-2C Navigator with no vent cowlings and navigator turret.
*New DDS texture sets developed from original FS9 and new art.
The panel and virtual cockpit changes were new Hobbs gauges and position coordinates for the VC
autopilot. There are no visible effects from the panel and VC changes.
In the FDE, the power_scalar and thrust_scalar were increased to 1.3. The sound was changed from the default DC-3 to the much improved sound file ba_gbr.zip by Mike Hambly.
