Question for Tom and the group. I havent put any time into the DC-4 as I am a bigger fan of the DC-6 and DC-7 series aircraft along with the B377/C97's. However, I am starting to think about getting more into the DC-4 now. In looking at the Jens K model, I wonder if the nose is shaped properly or if the model represents a non-radar nose? Jens work looks like a more rounded model. The images I have been looking at show what looks more like a DC-6 shaped (more pointed) nose. Is this a radar added model? See image below. If there is a difference in models is a radar equipped model available? Just checking for accuracy in case I lay some paint on this bird. Eric

Hi Eric, Originally the DC-4 (and DC-6 too) were built without a radar. However, later on in service, some DC-4s got a weather radar installed. Jens' packages for all three DC-4 variants (C-54, DC-4 and DC-4-1009) come with models for both non-radar and radar noses: The left one is the default Royal Danish Air Force DC-4 with radar that comes with the DC-4 V2 package; the right one is a Greenlandair DC-4 without radar. Hope this answers your question.

Ok, one more question...
After installing the DC-4 from the calclassic library, I have two DC-4's. One that says
"JBK Douglas DC-4-1009 V2" and another that says "JBK Douglas DC-4 V2"
What is the best way to install these? Do I need to leave both? One looks older than the other.
Somebody gimme the dope on the best most updated way to install and update these birds please!
Eric

As I remember the 1009 is the version built by Douglas as a DC-4 after the war, and the one without the 1009 is a converted C-54. They have flight dynamics and passenger/cargo door differences.
Hope this helps,

You mean 2009 Tom? (I am thinking so.)
Also does the download package, which is a little old now compared to some others, have the latest panel etc? The DC-4 could use the same work we have put into the DC-6 and 7 based on my first blush real look at it.

Hi Eric, '1009' is the designation for the default pax-configured DC-4 (DC-4-1009 in full); the "DC-4s" (without -1009 suffix) were ex-USAAF C-54Gs which were rebuilt for passenger service. There is also a third package (dc4cargo.zip on Flightsim.com) which covers the cargo variant. Jens has previously mentioned he's actually working on bringing the 4s "up to the latest standard"; however I do not know when he'll release it.

Thanks Tom
Do you know if there is a paint kit for the DC-4? If not I will make my own.

Hi Eric,
In fact two different radar domes are in use with DC-4/C-54 aircraft. A dome which is similar (pointy) to the one fitted to DC-6/7 aircraft and a blunter dome (see your photo and the screenie of Jens's Danish C-54D) which was introduced on the US military C-54/R5D.
Cheers, Maarten

Yes, I do! Jens uploaded the DC-4 Paint Kit both at Avsim.com and Flightsim.com (dc4_pt21.zip). Cheers, Maarten

Great. I'll go look for it. meantime, I have been playing with Jens' Rolf Viking for my own fun. Mainly just reworking the windows and the metalwork to my own tastes. ;D

That looks amazing, Eric! I must confess that Jens' DC-4 never really could catch my attraction (yet), because it always appeared a little too "clean, slick and even" to me... But your work on the blank metal sheets is awesome! Cheers, Markus.

Markus, I likely will not share this skin. Its not mine. Its Jens work. All I did was improve it a bit for my own use. Also to look at how these skins are put together so that other work can be created.
Jens and I have had discussions online before about his opinions about shiny metal. He likes flat oxidized gray metal. I prefer a bit more polish. For this reason, I wouldn't put out a mod of his work that changes that basic preference of his. But things like improved windows, reflections etc, I will apply to other skins.
Eric

Hi, Maybe this is the reason why this much better model has not as many repaints available than the former FS Berlin model. Cheers Wolfgang
