Hi All,
the GAAR is going home ! Bluegrass Airlines is organising next years rally and a big YIPPEEE to them all!
Now then.. grass runways..Captain Zlogg...bad Vodka..things dropped from great heights..all fearsome stuff and a man's airplane is needed for this sort of rally; should it be the Cessna 172 or the Connie? Let me thimk..

Not being a Connie driver, can it really get in and out on a 2700ft runway? On the other hand, do you really fancy the C172 for athe longest leg (at least 345nm, but possibly 450nm if a diversion is required).
What is needed is something reasonably quick, able to cope with outback airfields, waterproof (it rains a lot in NT at that time of year), and developed in the 1930s-1950s). Oh yes, and fun!
Ever thought about a Lancastrian? ;D

Actually, I was going to say than an AN-2 or Caribou would be about perfect for this kind of flight. Only problem is the AN-2 cruises around 90 knots, so it would only give that C172 a run for the money. OTOH, if you have a Cessna 177 or C210, you'll be in good shape. They can use that short of an airstrip and are quick in the air.
