Hi, For those that have been flying with me, you know I've been having problems with my aircraft textures and scenery textures loading after I've had FS9 running for a couple of hours....to the point where I sometimes don't even have an airport or other scenery displaying under me when it comes time to land. I'm starting over from scratch. I've been looking at the alternatives and using Toms' "Classic" language.dll to do my new install. I also plan to finally get my 7DVDs of FSGenesis Terrain mesh installed in this one. Now for my request from all of you... Have any of you tried "Silver Wings" for a "classic" and found it more appropriate than backdating the initial 2004 default installation? Are there other combinations you've tried and liked? Any ideas would be appreciated. ;D Yours,

I have successfully used Silver Wings and the entire CalClassic scenery collection without significant issues since day one. In fact, I hardly even remember what the stock FS9 world looks like anymore since I use that installation so seldom. The Radio Range v4 scenery looks good in Silver Wings too even if I seldom use the A's and N's, the towers make great VFR landmarks and the approach plates are applicable to many airports in the CONUS.
The only terrain mesh that I'm using is a freeware for western British Columbia and Vancouver Island and it works fine using FSSW.
Hope I understood your request correctly.
Chris

Chris, Thanks, that's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. I have had Golden Wings 3 for some time, but I've never installed Silver Wings. From what I've seen, it's a LOT "greener" than the default....like Golden Wings. Lot's of tall green trees. Can you tell if that hits your frame rates much over a default installation? Yours,

Hi, Randy...
Silver Wings is the basis for my FS Classics installation, too. I'd put it somewhere between Golden Wings (which I also have) and the default FS9, scenery-wise. One big difference from GW is that there are taxi-ways at airports.
Good luck,
Glenn

I did not noticed any frame rate hit with either FSGW3 or FSSW compared with default in my old 1.2 GHz Athlon and it was marginal for FS9 at best.
I would also recommend getting rid of the photo-real city sceneries if you do install FSSW, cannot remember off-hand if that is required or not.

I have a modern FS9 installation, with GE PRO, FSGLobal and a lot of other stuff.. Just copied to a new folder. manually wiped out all the modern things, and installed retro scenery, and Toms stuff, and have a nice other universe.
Everything works normally, but one have to take car with auto installers, to point them to your other folder.
Also, rename fs9.exe to for example fs9v.exe. Then copy the fs9.cfg to fs9v.cfg and you can have two different cfg's for both sims.
What the heck is Silver Wings?

Hi Randy!
I've 3 FS installations: Golden Wings (20's and 30's aircraft), a bush install which has add-ons for Alaska and British Columbia bush-type flying and, finally, my Classic install. The Silver Wings textures make things "greener" as some have already said, but the installation also deletes some autogen buildings, giving the appearance of a less populated world, about like the Classic era may have appeared. Aaaaand, all the scenery mods available here at CAl Classics work just fine!
As Tom would say "Hope this helps"

Hi, I've installed Silver Wings over my Classic installation. (..for more on "Silver Wings", see here: www.theoldhangar.com ;D Tom Constantine is still in business. ) I'm VERY happy with the resulting improvements in weather, framerates from the autogen (covering much of what is "modern" business districts in large cities with "farms" and post WWII suburbs.) Overall, performance is better than a default FS9 installation. (Smoother with all the same or higher than default settings). I was happy with everything except the airport pavements. The concrete is just too "brown". ..So, I went back to my old favorites: Airland1.zip WOW! I never realized now much of a hit just those textures are on performance! On my old installation, I all ready had so many addons that I expected it to lag, but this was nuts! From 19.9 frames per second before to as low as 4 fps at KLAX (default Silver Wings textures, default KLAX, traffic set 100% [default traffic]) If you can are suffering from "slide-slow-itis" or just want to improve performance a bit... see if you can live without that beautiful concrete and asphalt in the Airland1 package (AVSIM). (These textures are 1024x ...NOT the usual 512x. I guess I missed that part when I added them a couple of years ago.) I'll post a screenshot when I start getting retro scenery installed. I'm still testing the basics out. Thanks, guys!

I have recently installed SW (really nice with the new Kansas City airport Btw) with no problems except large black squares in some towns. Go to the The Old Hangar mentioned above & find the forum devoted to Golden & Silver Wings. Page 2 has a query 'black spots in SW' & the answer to the problem is there. Worked for me!

In my GS Golden Wings installation I kept finding these odd big white blocks around some airports but not others. Turned out missing one particular tree texture was the cause and now textures are the first place I look when odd graphic events happen.
Probably a blinding glimpse of the obvious and old news for most of you though.
