Thanks again to Col7777 & qxtoolman. I found that using key 6 (coupling view) & then zooming out you can then get a vertical view which you can compare to a plan. Also zooming out at an angle is very useful. I understand the track monitor much better now,Col. Thanks. Possible tip - I loaded a new route today & when I ran it the frame rate was down to single figures. It stayed like that even though I removed the route & still did when I removed MSTS & re-installed it. It only went back to a good FPS after I had re-booted the PC. I think I used to do that with FS9 sometimes. Runing well now with ADFRR installed. Now to try & make my own consists with some downloaded engines!! Happy days! ChrisD

Chis,
If you are making consists, I use Conbuilder, it is so easy, plus you can change them later if you decide. Remember to name your consists like I told you something like:
Chris_Class47_16xGrainHoppers
Or whatever the train is, that way if you decide to delete the engine you can easily find the consist to delete as well.

I found this program the other day for MSTS: msts.juliane-und-torben.de/index_e.htm#activitychangerIt is very easy to use and adds ai trains to an activity, it works very well, it is good to see trains coming towards you when travelling to your destination. Also if there is a train in front the signals either slow you down or stop you till the line is clear. If you decide to change things back to what they were it rolls back at the click of the mouse, no need to back up the activity.

Thanks Col7777. Downloaded the AI program also a consist maker program from UK trains. Not as in depth as Con Builder but then it is free! When I get some free time from decorating the spare bedroom I'll start getting into them. ChrisD

I have been both a plane and train nut since a child and have been following this thread since it started. Needless to say it got me motivated to go out and get a copy - ordered it online from Walmart. Has been fun climbing the learning curve to add engines, rolling stock etc.
What has me somewhat perplexed is the sim has a propensity to freeze causing my computer to crash. It seems very fickle about it likes and dislikes and was wondering if this is normal for this 8 year old program.
Anyway, it has been fun to put in steam engines, freight and passenger cars I had on my Lionel and H.O. train set as a kid.

Out of the box, this is a rather buggy platform, but can become really enjoyable, with a few modifications. The first thing to make sure of is that you apply the official patch, which should be available here: www.microsoft.com/games/pc/trainsim.aspx#downloadsAfter that, I would recommend a range of tweaks to the default.wag file (in the trainset folder) and the coupler codes of the rolling stock. RouteRiter can manage the latter task quite well. This should take care of most, if not all of the crashes related to operating trains themselves. I would recommend the MSTSbin patch, once you're happy with your installation. This has really turned the sim into a platform more like it should have been in the first place. You'll need the official patch in place before this one will install, but the improvements in sounds, framerates and overall performance are well worth the fuss... -Phil

Hi Phil:
Thanks for the info.
Downloaded the patch and the MSTSbin as you recommended and so far the sim has not crashed. I have RouteRiter and will take a look at it later this week when time permits.
There is a lot to learn and it has been a great escape for me from the real world.
Thanks again,
Chuck

I can't take credit for this, it was posted by a guru on the train sim forum:
"I think that maybe MSTS runs a lottery each time it starts. Whatever numbers come up generate the error for today."
How true that is.
