Was going to say "precisely the same thing" too Was privileged to ride in the NZ WAEBIRDS PBY-5A CATALINA though Think the SHORTS SANDRIGNHAM services operated by ANSETT (from Sydney/Rose Bay to Lord Howe Island and Whitsunday .... and yp some lake on the Australian eastern seaboard too who's name momentarily escapes me for the moment) continued until around 1975 .... I think it was .... and may have been the last commercial "flying boat" service anywhere in the world .... although this might have been superseded by ANTILLES AIR BOATS since that's where I think both of the ANSETT operated SANDRINGHAM's ended up Mark C

Ansett did fly a couple of charters to Lake Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains, in the early 70s I think. And in the mid 60s for a few weeks the airline flew a service with one of the Sandringhams from Redland Bay to Gladstone Harbour while the runway at Gladstone was being resurfaced. Some days I was fortunate to see it fly over. Brian Moncton flew the second aircraft from Australia to the Caribbean.

Below is a link to a youtube page where Kermit Weeks an owner of a Short Sunderland recently posted a couple of videos. They were shot at his tourist spot, Fantasy of Flight, in central Florida. In the two videos he does a complete tour of both the outside and inside of the plane and describes how he came to own the plane, when he last flew it, what it takes to maneuver it on the water, and what his future plans are. I thought maybe some of the folks reading this thread might like to view them. Ed Short Sunderland Tour

I would so much like to have these flying boats as AI. But I never found any. Did I miss them or is there really no flying boat AI?

Still going - This is Apia Harbour circa 1958 when TEAL went there on the way to Aiutaki and then Tahiti on the Coral Sea route.

Update I will keep this one to screenshots and will start a new thread re probably uploads and packages in the Cal Classic Discussion Forum. I got out to Kiribati to do the RNZAF flying boat base there at Bieto at the other end of the Tarawa Atoll where they had a base and used to go up until the mid 1960s in the Sunderlands. Big mistake, not really, on a detour at the moment to fix up some scenery stuff starting with the main airport which is ok to my mind now but serious issues in this whole area with misalignments of where airports are in the real world and where the atolls are - even with ORBX. Good news is as I go I have mastered the art of creating locators for the scenery index which means just looking them up in the scenery go to menu and selecting and FSX will take you to the correct place. So even if some users do not have all the librarys needed the water airfields created will take you to the correct place. I have spent a lot of time researching each and every place and correlated them with photographs etc so unlike some past efforts all these flying boat bases or spots will be where they were. Anyway the Kiribati area is a bit of a mess so I might be working on it for awhile.

This is Papeete Tahiti on the main island of Tahiti, the flying boats went here not to the seaplane base besides the airport. This took some time because there was basically no town here at all so I had to try and recreate what it sort of looked like pre 1960 before they did landfill on the harbour etc.

RNZAF Sunderland in Tarawa Harbour. This is south Tarawa or Betio Island. This island was the place where the Battle for Tarawa took place with the landing of the US Marines in 1943. There was an airstrip on this island but it is all houses and roads now. Tarawa airport main is on the northern end of the lagoon in North Tarawa some distance away. The Sunderland is JBK's wonderful Short Hythe converted back to a Sunderland MK V and can be found in the library at SimOuthouse.

Back into Europe and the Middle East. Brindisi Harbour. This was just a refuel stop and they used the harbour even though there was a large Italian Air Force Seaplane base across the other side. Politics of the 30's Piraeus or the Harbour at Athens.

Pakistan - Koorangi Creek. Kept this simple based on Bruce Kennewells scenery which alas for FSX did not work but remains faithful here. Still working on the major RAF base that was down the road a piece.
