The 747 first flew 50 years ago today.
What an impact that aircraft made! My first 747 flight was 1977. Next 747 flight is next month to Vancouver. It might be on G-BNLN. delivered 1990 and still in service. 120,000 hours as of June 2018.
Well done Boeing.

I’ve only been on one 747, a TWA -100 sometime in the 70s. I was flying from Sacramento to LAX to go back to UCLA, and noticed that a 747 LAX to JFK flight had a SFO to LAX tag end added to it. So I flew a Hughes Airwest DC-9 from SMF to SFO and then the 747 from SFO to LAX. Lots of fun.

That sounds fun Tom! Nothing like those milk runs in the old days before LCCs.
I remember my first 747 flight like yesterday - at 15 accompanying my dad on a biz trip to Asia. We flew NW27 SFO-NRT-BKK. It was one of the early 1970s -251Bs, and our departure from SFO was long, rattling and felt almost as powerful as our 1989 Bay Area earthquake!
Have flown on many since, with ANA, Thai, Cathay, United, Delta and Korean. Most recently flew the 747-8 last summer ICN-SFO, and the Queen still has a better feel than the big twins that are so common and boring today. I view the new ones as a link to the better angels of yesteryear.

Tom I'm willing to bet that was our Flight 760 LAX SFO LHR I worked for TWA in SFO and remember it well.

Hi,
It definitely could have been that flight; I didn't realize they were flying LAX-LHR back then. Sounds logical.
Thanks,

747-100, 747-200, and 747-300 are considered classic. 747-400 is not yet classic
