Since 1959 the Dart Herald embarked upon an ambitious series of world demonstrations tours. The aircraft visited potential airline and air force customers in the Middle East and Asia, and later an extensive tour of a dozen South American capitals. The importance placed on the success of the Herald can be judged by the fact that, in 1962, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh joined the sales team for a marketing tour of South America. Already an experienced pilot - he was taught to fly by WW2 ace Peter Townsend - Prince Philip flew BEA's Herald G-APWA on an extended tour to promote interest in the airliner. Interesting that alongside him, in the co-pilot's seat, was Peter Middleton, who in 1982 would become the grandfather of the future Duchess of Cambridge Despite the Royal endorsement, the South American sales tour did not result in any sales for the Herald from any of the countries visited and it was only later that Sadia of Brazil placed an order for the type. Furthermore, Handley Page had hoped that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh would promote the aircraft to be operated by The Queens Flight, but in the end they bought Hawker Siddeley 748 Andovers. The Dart Herald G-AODF during the demonstration flight from Alto Intl, La Paz over the Andes, in spite of the originally used G-APWA. The G-AODF was in fact the second Herald prototype. Bernard

A plane that was just a little bit too late, since many airlines had chosen the F.27 or 748 by this time...
