Beginning 60's Ansett-ANA provided a "heli-cab" service from Melbourne Essendon Airport to the City Heliport situated on the banks of Yarra River. Until 1963 this service was provided by a Hiller 12C and from then by a Bell 47J Ranger. In spite of a appropriated textured one, I have to use a blank Bell 47J. Landing at Essendon Airport... and seen at Yarra Bank Heliport Bernard

Helicopters back in the 60's and 70's were going to solve the problem of getting to and from airports without having to deal with traffic and get you from point a to point b in record time. While a few companies are still attempting to revive this service, it really has kind of gone the way of the Dodo bird. The concept in general was a great one but way too expensive for the average Joe and therefore most helicopter shuttle services eventually folded. I do remember seeing LA Airways Sikorsky's land at the Disneyland hotel in Anaheim and always envied those rich enough to afford the fare. Traffic now is much worse of course in Southern California and a quick but affordable air shuttle service would really be nice. I wonder if the new concept of pilotless drone service is going to go catch on or go the same way as helicopter service has gone. Be interesting to see where it all ends up.
Regards, Phil

Sir Reginald Ansett used to commute in a float equipped Bell 47 to his Melbourne CBD office from his home at Mt. Eliza to a landing spot on the Yarra River. No sitting in traffic for him.
