The French Cuers Pierrefeu airport was a naval aeronautical base of the French Navy located northeast of Toulon. It was closed in 2008. This place was and still is entrusted with the maintenance in operational condition of various aircraft. Here some of classic era (Breguet Alizé, Grumman TBM-3 Avenger, Beech 18, Lockheed Neptune P2V, Nord 1000 Pinguin - a French built ME108, Dassault MD311). Cuers-Pierrefeu also was a kind of boneyard of decommissioned Vought F4U7 Corsair (don't care about the fire in the background - it's unfortunately a seasonal phenomenon in Southern France) Furthermore the base provided connections to the Ile du Levant, one of the islands just in front of Heyères peninsula and other famous places of the Côte d'Azur. That wouldn't be exciting at all, but the French military has been operating a missile testing facility on this island since 1948. Even some French medium-range missiles were launched in the late 1960s. Rather strange for such a touristic area. Bernard
