Several weeks ago, (before our daily lives changed)I had some problems with the PC that FS9 was on. After attempts at fixing it repeatedly failed,I ended up scrapping it. As of present, and looking down the road a bit,a replacement is beyond my reach so I was forced to install the sim on an old laptop. Performance was pretty poor but I was able to run our prop planes thank goodness as well as a few "period" airports. No AI though, and even then, frame rates were pretty bad compared to what I'd become used to. So anyway, I started getting freeze ups with the laptop and a msg that said "Microsoft Flight Simulator has encountered a problem and needs to close". This happened 4-5 times and then the program wouldn't open at all, showing a msg which read, "Need to log in as administrator". Never had to do that before and had no clue what to do. Uninstalled FS9 and did clean installs 2 or 3 times with same results. Was forced to install FS2002 just to be able to get some kicks but I'm telling you, once you've had FS9 on a "hot ticket" setup, it's mighty, mighty hard to step back.
FS9 WAS installed as C:\FS9
Can anyone help ? Anyone ?

OK, I found the KB3086255 MS update and uninstalled it. Did a fresh install of FS9. Ran the 9.1 update and then the no CD patch. Fired up FS9 and got the "Flight Simulator has stopped working. Microsoft is checking for a solution and needs to close the program".

Search the web for Windows Compatibility options to help. One thing to try is switch to windowed mode (via cfg file edit if needed).
fs2004 windows 10 compatibility

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago when I had to reinstall FS9 into a rebuilt computer. I had also never seen that message before and had no idea why it was occuring. But strangely enough when I reinstalled my whole "Flight Simulator 9" back up which overwrote the installed "FS 9" file everything worked just as it should. I still don't know how or why it fixed the problem.
Perhaps that is something you could look at doing and see if that solves the problem.

Tom, The compatibility option seems to be a little beyond my ability. I did take a look at it but frankly find it very difficult to understand. There was an option to run sort of a scan and the response was that "no compatibility issues were found". Windows 7 don't forget, not 10. Also can't access the CFG if the program has not loaded initially. Can I ? This morning when I tried to load FS9, I again got the msg "Access denied - Please login with administrator privileges and try again". JWH Re: FS9 backup. Do you mean you reinstalled the program OVER the existing one ? Not quite understanding.....
Thanks everyone, Mike

Hi, I believe he means renaming the new FS folder by adding something like Backup to the name. Then copying over a saved FS folder onto the computer and giving it the same name as the original FS folder.

So I renamed FS9 to FS9.bak. When I close out of it I got the msg "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program".

just a thought...how old is this 'old laptop'? If you are running Windows 7 on it, it may be that certain updates that the laptop never received before Microsoft dropped Win7, are now beyond reach. My son's desktop had a similar problem, he never let the system update things automatically, while I allowed mine to, and while our desktops are not entirely the same spec, they were running the same OS. Mine was just updated, his wasn't. When Microsoft stopped supporting 7, the same games on our individual machines behaved differently. He could not run the same program without having issues while I had no issues at all. It may be your old laptop is suffering the same dilemma...

Hi Mike Yes. I installed my backup over the existing one and clicked to overwrite. Wish I knew why that worked. I still run my FS9 on Windows 7 as I have it on a stand alone computer that is not connected to the internet. My FS computer has two drives C and F. FS9 is installed on the F drive and the backup was on the C drive. After I had reinstalled FS9 and received that 'Administrator' message I copied the backup over from the C drive to the F drive. I didn't do it as a folder to folder transfer but opened the backup on C and the relevant folder on F, highlighted the contents on C and transferred it that way. As I said, I am still in the dark as to why that fixed it.

So I tried to do a second install onto a flash drive with the intent on copying it OVER the main installation on the C drive. After firing up disc #1, there was no option to install. Only uninstall or run. I uninstalled the C drive copy. After removing the program from C, disc #1 gave me the option to install and as we speak I'm installing to F which in this case is the flash drive. I'll try copying back into the C drive when complete. Will do the 9.1 update and the noCD patch before copying over. Actually should try and run it right from the flash drive before transferring. It's late in the evening now but I'll report back in the AM.
Thanks to all, wish me luck,
Mike

beeker46 Bought the computer from a friend 8 years ago. Don't know how long he had it. I know, pretty old for a cheap laptop.Windows 7 Home Premium. Guess I'm lucky it runs at all. Really slow though. At the moment it's all I've got. Laid off from work for a month now. Far as I know all the updates were done.
Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. Appreciate it wicked !

Uninstalled FS9 and did clean installs 2 or 3 times with same results. Did you uninstall with the exe application resp. Software Manager or just deleted FS9 folder? Bernard

Mike, I'm thinking this is probably a hardware problem. A common cause, and often overlooked, of stability problems is the power source. You mentioned the problems started with freeze-ups. That is typical for lack of power source stability, especially if no obvious software problem causes it. FS is asking maximum performance from the laptop which the adapter-battery combination may not be able to deliver anymore. This can cause programs and/or the operating system to encounter failures, to which Windows then reacts with messages like the ones you get. Files could get damaged in the process perhaps, because of improper writing/closing during moments of lost stability. If that has happened, problems persist even if the power supply would be OK at a given moment. Whether that can be corrected by reinstalls I am not sure. You would be almost certain to run into the same situation again anyway, if stable power is still the problem. If this is indeed the case, the only solution would be to find a replacement adapter and/or battery and probably reinstall at least FS9 again, maybe also do a Windows repair. The required hardware is probably hard to find, especially with the required 'health' of both. Additionally, I could be wrong of course. But should you be able to get hold of replacement components that may be worth a try.
Erik
