Just ordered a new computer this evening. Nothing outrageous but it should run FS9 with the sliders maxed. Never having installed FS9 to Windows 10, I was wondering if anyone could help out. I will be installing directly to the SSD drive of course, but after that, any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

o INSTALL FS2004 to your new Windows 10 PC 1. Install into C:\ NOT into it's default C:\Program Files 2. Install the 9.1 updatel 3. Install the 9.1 nocd patch 4. Right-click the FS9.exe, select Properties 5. Select Compatibility mode, & select XP 6. At bottom, then select 'Run as Administrator' 7. Double click the desktop icon To COPY & PASTE from your OLD PC to your NEW Windows 10 PC From your OLD PC: 1. Copy the whole FS2004 folder to a portable drive 2. Open the Documents Folder & copy the 'Flight Simulator Files' folder to a portable drive 3. Find the FS2004.cfg file & copy it to your portable drive This is normally found in C:\Users\xxx(your user)\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9 An easy way to find this FS2004.cfg is to download EVERYTHING from www.voidtools.com(This is a very fast desktop search engine that will find the file as you type) Once all that is done: 1. Plug the portable drive into your NEW PC 2. Open the C:\ folder & copy & paste the copied FS2004 folder therein 3. Right-click the FS2004.exe & 'Send to Desktop (create shortcut) You now will have a Desktop FS2004 icon 4. Copy & paste the 'Flight Simulator Files' folder into your 'Documents' folder 5. Right-click the FS9.exe, select Properties 6. Select Compatibility mode, & select XP 7. At bottom, then select 'Run as Administrator' 8. Double click the desktop icon THEN 9. Copy & Paste the FS2004.cfg file into C:\Users\xxx(your user)\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9 10. Double click the desktop icon NOTE: I'm interchanging FS9 with FS2004. Be consistent with your install. Yeah, that's pretty much what I had figured. Gonna be doing a clean install as opposed to copying over. Just wanted to know if there were any hidden pitfalls. The new unit has both SSD (256 GB),and a SATA hard drive (1TB), and I'm going to install to the SSD.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it works out.

Been busy with the new computer. Got FS9 installed OK. Couple of issues so far though. The CalClassic CV-240, CV-340, and the L-1649 all crash the computer when loading. Haven't yet tried the other Convairs, but all the other Connies run fine. Also, I tried to install EVP and got a msg that I needed .NET Framework 1.1.4322. All I could find was version 1 on Filehippo. Downloaded it but it wouldn't install. Got an error msg. Computer says there's a newer version already on it. Oh yeah, the "Realistic Engine Start" from the Convair is not working on other aircraft (DC-3)
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Starting problem solved. For now. I edited out the 3 engine start lines in the panel cfg's of the offending planes and now they all work fine. Seems I recall that some computers have problems with that particular function. Anyone know of a work around for it? I love that start feature and would hate to have it permanently out of commission. Now, as for the EVP...............

Hi,
I don’t know of any workaround for some computers crashing when loading the realistic start gauges, sorry.

Mike,
Does the 3-4-2-1/2-1 start not work at all or do the props turn but not fire up? And are you using the same aircraft.cfg normalised_starter_torque settings in the [piston_engine] section that worked with your old PC?
EVP. Can't speak for EVP but I have found that some support programmes for FS9 don't work on W10. So I use my old XP PC (wi-fi off!) for these and just move files on a stick.

When you choose the aircraft and hit "Fly Now", you get the "spinning circle of death" for several moments. Then it goes back to the splash screen and you have to begin again. As I mentioned earlier, this happened with the CV-340, CV-240, L-1649A, and the default DC-3. After removing the lines in the CFGs of these planes, they all loaded fine. Except of course for the lack of slow starting.

Did you try the various Compatibility options for FS2004 to see if that would make a difference? Start with WinXP or Win7 settings?

Huh ? Didn't know I had compatibility options let alone how to use them. Sorry.
Installed all the DC-6's and 7's this AM. The realistic start didn't work on them either. Deleted the cfg lines and they all work fine. Again just no slow start.

I don't have Win10 but you can do a web search for "using fs2004 with windows 10" and you should find them.
Most have this advice:
Right-click the FS2004 desktop icon, select the Compatibility tab, Click Compatibility Mode & select Windows XP (Service Pack2) from the pull down menu, & tick 'Run this program as an administrator' Then Apply & OK.
If this doesn't fix this problem, then you can reverse these settings.
And be sure FS2004 is not installed in any Program Files folder.
