All my AI airliners (2 and 4 engine) sound like a C172-- What do I need to do to get more of a bigger sound from my AI traffic. I don't see anything in the sound folder except for 2 engine turboprop. What sounds would I need, how do I get my traffic to use them---Thanks, Paul

If you look in the main sound folder (FS2004/Sound) you will find wav files with names starting with ai and xai. All AI aircraft will use the ones starting with ai when you are in the cockpit and the ones starting with xai when in exterior (spot) view. You can either download a replacement package from the usual places and see how you like them, or find idle sounds you like better and replace them yourself. For our ai propliners (twinprop, as I remember) I boosted up the volume of the Propsound external idle sound and used that. My AI sound package (complete with touchdown effects) is still available here: www.calclassic.com/Temp/AI_Touchdown_Effects.zipMore info here: calclassic.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=495&page=1It's still considered a beta - I was supposed to add these to the AI packages but never got around to it, since I am very wary of overwriting default files. Hope this helps,

douglasdc3.com/fs2004/fs2004.htm Cut a paste into address box. This will take you to a page (a little more than half way down) containing a file named "ai-dc3-sd.zip". It will give you DC-3 AI traffic sounds for fs2004. No more C172 ai sounds. It does work. Good day, Dennis.

Okay, I have the new sound files, now how do I get my multi engine (DC-6, Connie), AI aircraft to use them. Short of putting a sound alias to the proper aircraft in each folder. Or could I put an alias to the new sound file in FS9 sound folder in each ai folder.

Hi,
The regular sound system (i.e. the sound folder in each plane's folder) does not work for ai aircraft in FS2004. They will play only the sounds in the main FS/sound folder.
Hope this helps,

So how does the the the AI aircraft tell the FS9 sound which kind of file to use for it's default sound.

Hi, On a separate but related note, do sounds in multi-player use this system as well? This could explain why some of the planes we use end up sounding like Cessnas! (L-1649A and others) Yours,

My bottom line is to get my ai multi-engines to NOT sound like a Cessna.

ALL of the piston propliners (from the DC-3 to the Starliner) play the files:
ai_twinprop01.wav xai_twinprop01.wav
Change those files and your propliners will no longer sound like Cessnas.
The turboprops (580, 188, Britannia, etc.) play the following files:
ai_twinturbo01.wav xai_twinturbo01.wav ai_twinturbo02.wav xai_twinturbo02.wav
Although I don't think I've ever heard one use the "2" files. It's supposed to be random.
All the early jet airliners play the following files:
ai_lgjet01.wav xai_lgjet01.wav ai_lgjet02.wav xai_lgjet02.wav ai_lgjet03.wav xai_lgjet03.wav
But again I've never heard them use the "2" and "3" files.
There is NO way to specify any other wav file they will play, sorry.
That said, there is a payware program that many of us use, called FSHotSFX. It will play takeoff and missed approach sounds, which greatly enhance the experience. However, while still available be SURE to try out the demo and make sure it works to your satisfaction first, because you will get NO support, other than reactivating your reg code.
This program lets you play different sounds for each and every aircraft, but the idle sounds are still the defaults I list above.
Hope this helps,

When I flew my new Super G into San Francisco yesterday, an AI connie passed me as I shut down at my gate. It sounded like a Cessna 172. Any guess as to why is didn't sound like,at least, a twin engine. Hos does the flight sim determine what kind of of sound for an AI aircraft is appropiate. ie: turboprop, jet, propliner.

Hi,
It's determined from the settings in the plane's aircraft.cfg file.
If more than one piston engine, FS plays:
ai_twinprop01.wav xai_twinprop01.wav
If more than one turboprop engine, FS plays:
ai_twinturbo01.wav xai_twinturbo01.wav
Hope this helps,

I'll be dogged if I can find any reference to how many engines in my ai .cfg--- I find type (engine type=O (piston) - turboprop=5, but I can't see a reference to number of engines. Unless perhaps my ai .cfg is not complete, or that I need to add a reference line.

Here is the relevant section from a plane's aircraft.cfg file. This plane has 4 engines (0 through 3), and piston engines (engine type = 0):
[GeneralEngineData] engine_type=0 Engine.0=8.33,-11.5,-0.41 Engine.1=6.91,-8.83,-0.83 Engine.2=6.91,8.83,-0.83 Engine.3=8.33,11.5,-0.41 fuel_flow_scalar=0.97 min_throttle_limit=-0.40000
Hope this helps,

Thank You that's what I was looking for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. That is why I love Cal Classics. Whatever you need or mess up, there is always great help. Of all my different Flight Sim versions, my CalClassics always seems to be my most enjoyable. Maybe all my fellow simmers help make it that way. I grew up and live in Kansas City, if that is of any help to anyone let me know, so I could be as helpful as the other great simmers on this forum.
