I have 17 Gigs dedicated to CalClassics. If any one needs domestic aircraft, ai, or scenery, I probably have it. So we're somewhat covered for now.

Hi,
Thanks pung, that should help.
I have been slowly converting over many of my links to flightsim.com.
I have done the following pages: B377 Stratocruiser Constellation DC-4 DC-6 DC-6B (some missing) DC-7C (some missing)
I can't find Eric Joiner's paint jobs at flightsim, nor can I find most of Wayne Tudor's DC-6B's, DC-7B's, or DC-7C's. Hopefully the authors will have them (Eric?) or know where they can be found.
Try them out and see if they work for you.
Hope this helps,

The Prime Directive of Computing: Always Make Backups! I'm a little surprised that Avsim's backup setup was so fragile. But I guess I can't complain about a site that has, since its inception, been run for free. I hope it'll return soon.
Here's a thought, Tom. What would be involved in providing CalClassic its own storage site, freeing us from worry of any future attacks/technical faults at other sites? How about another generic file hosting site? What does a massive storage media device cost these days? I'd be willing to chip in, if it meant keeping our data safer.
If we were to lose everything one day, I'd have to throw myself off a simulated cliff!

Hi Tom, In reading Al's comments about the CalClassics site being its own storage site; I am not familar at all about the workings of a server storage site however, my question is this: Can you possible do something like what HJG (Historic Jetliners Group) hosts--its own download link for HJG sponsored aircraft, panels, sounds, effects etc.? For the CalClassics site it could be the aircraft that supports the mission of this site (Propliners), sounds, panels, repaints and effects along with era appropriate airport scenery. Maybe something like this is beyond your capability at this time, but possibly in light of what has happened to AVSIM, CalClassics site could over time "evolve" into a site that hosts a FS "resource library" Just a thought. The story I was told about AvSims backups was that they were running two servers, each backed up on the other. Both servers were attacked at the same time. Very similar to what happened at SOH a few weeks ago. We got lucky and had some backups that were a bit dated but usable.
As for it not being a hacker attack, the odds of both servers going down at the same time are very slim.

I have a considerable collection of CalClassic files, sceneries and aircraft (but not too many liveries unfortunately) backed up as well, and hope I can be of some help.

Each server backed up the other server. Works great until something happens to both at the same time.

To help with the restoration, if needed, I also have heaps of repaints, so if needed, I can either find the original zip file, or zip up what I have as needed. I have close to 80 DC-6 repaints, and about 50 Convair repaints. I also have about 30 L-049 repaints. I think I have all the retro sceneries. If any of the original authors need help, please send me an e-mail. My address is to the left.
Cheers, Mike.

Hi all, Thanks for the offers of files, etc. I do not envision dealing with finding and uploading all the missing files at this time. If people want to help, they can see if they have the missing zip files (i.e. the ones still linked to AVSIM on the pages I've converted) and upload those original zip files to flightsim.com. Then either email me or announce it on this forum. This is a simple FTP upload, nothing else required. I don't think most authors would object to this, given AVSIM's demise. Let us know if you would prefer to opt out of that, authors. We need the original zip files, since I would not feel right repackaging someone else's work (although Wayne Tudor has given me permission a while back to do what I like with his files, but I don't think he envisioned this kind of thing). Now a bit about the CalClassic site. First a little history - this site was originally called the Classic Airliner Page (not too many people still around that remember that, but I know there are a few), and was dedicated to all propliners out on the web. It got to the point that I was spending numerous hours each weekend doing nothing but updating the page. It got to be such a drudge that when the IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) FS file server (the only big FS file library at the time) announced they were shutting down *I* announced that this would be the end of the Classic Airliner Page. It was just too much work every week, and shifting file servers for the hundreds of links was the straw that killed me. I was shocked when dozens of people passionately pleaded with me to keep the page. I had no idea that it really mattered to that many people. So we compromised - the page would morph into the CalClassic Propliner Page (and thus many fewer planes to deal with), but the forum would continue to discuss all propliners around the world. I eventually expanded some things back to the entire world (like the AI package, for example), but the planes have always been limited to California. If you read the messages over in the AVSIM temporary forum, what was the real reason for all this mess? The lack of a competent IT person in charge of the servers there. Thus they cobbled together a backup system (with the best of intentions) that ended up failing. I have a similar history. I had a forum hosted by Marco at the old Simufly site. He ended up having financial problems and shut down the site. I had to move the forum to my own server very quickly - a lot of work. Spamming problems eventually led me to move the forum again here to proboards - I rapidly found out that I had little aptitude for server maintenance and such. I have also had several offers to host files on other servers, which I've taken up twice. The first time once I had numerous files on the server they guy lost his job and the server vanished, almost without warning. The second time the guy lost interest even before I moved any files there. So I am highly skeptical of "external" file storage. I assumed that AVSIM would be a safe place, and you see how well that went... So I will not start moving the files now on my server anywhere else. That server is essentially full (I have 500 MB of space), and thus I will not be adding many new files - what you see is probably what you will get here for the foreseeable future. The entire concept of the CalClassic setup is that it is easy for me to maintain. It requires little time, and I link most of the files to (what I thought was) a stable file library. That will now shift from AVSIM to flightsim.com; the first few pages have already been converted. I don't want to link to servers all over the web for various files - that will increase my maintenance work as they drop off the web, change web links, etc. So while the talk of CalClassic becoming some kind of propliner file library is a logical thought it will never happen, simply because I don't want to become a file librarian. I want to continue creating things for myself and my friends here at CC. If this page ever becomes a drudge again, it will be shut down, post haste. That said, if someone else would like to take on the huge time commitment and hard work of creating such a file library, I would certainly be willing to link files to it, once it become clear that it will be maintained and will be stable. However, I don't think that is really necessary at this point. There are plenty of file libraries out there already. And I think you would be naive to assume that any little file library we establish would be safer or more stable than places like AVSIM or flightsim.com! So, other than helping find and upload the missing files to flightsim.com, I don't think there is anything that needs to be done at this time. The forum and CC page itself are relatively stable at this time, once the links get converted over to the flightsim library. Luckily I find myself with some extra time at this time (yesterday was the last day of classes at the University where I work), so this couldn't have happened at a better time (although let me be clear that there is no "good" time for this kind of thing to happen, and I sympathize with Tom Allensworth for all this trouble he and the rest of the AVSIM staff are enduring for something that is really no more than a hobby). Thanks for all the support,

PS. One thing - if you upload any files to flightsim.com, make sure to remove the avsim.diz file (as I remember the name) from the zip file.

Hii Tom
As a devoted and dedicated Calclassic Friend, i have a full backup of all scenarios and support files, all aircrafts with all available repaints and the last updates. If you need, give me a mail address and I'll put everything on several DVDs and ship it to you by mail.
No problem at all... it is the only decent thing i can do after all the many yours of pleasure and enjoyment that you and your team gave me.
Long live the flightsim community!!!!!!
