It's a Wednesday morning, early in 1961, and at Paris Orly airport passengers are arriving for their flight. Royal Air Maroc flight 463 is standing on the tarmac, waiting for the final arrangements.
At about 6:50 am, the gates are closed for the flight. The aircraft has been fully loaded, and the last passengers are boarding the flight. The Constellation has been fuelled for the entire route, but is only partially filled, as it will take on additional passengers at Toulouse-Blagnac.
At 7:05 am, the Constellation fires up its DA-3s. One by one they start rumbling, while the copilot and F/O complete their checklists. The F/O contacts ground: "Orly Ground, Royal Air Maroc 463 requests permission to the active."
Minutes later, Flight 463 is taxying to runway 08. On the apron, it passes past some brandnew Boeing 707s, the symbol of a fast-changing world.
Not long after that, the Connie arrives at the runway. After some last checks, the crew radios in to the tower, and receives permission for take-off.
Changing frequencies, the crew calls Villers control. "Villers Control, Royal Air Maroc 463 at FL12 climbing to FL120". "Villers Control, Roger Royal Air Maroc 463. Turn right heading 245."
As she turns, the passengers glimpse the busy city of Paris. "I can see the Eiffel Tower!" a child exclaims.
Continuing its climb, the Constellation turns around Orly airport, giving the passengers a good view of the busy airport.
And just as she starts to leave the airport behind her, the crew gets a call. "Royal Air Maroc 463, Villers control. Change frequency to Paris Control." "Roger Villers control. Changing frequency to Paris Control. Out."
"Good morning, Paris Control, Royal Air Maroc 463 at FL 46 climbing to FL120." "Roger, Royal Air Maroc 463. Turn left heading 210 and proceed to FL 120." "Roger, Paris Control".
Soon, the Connie starts to reach its cruising altitude. Levelling off just above the cloud deck, the engineer throttles down the engines to cruising settings.
Toulouse is still over an hour away, so while the stewardesses start to make their round with breakfast, we leave our Constellation. Clear skies ahead! ^_^
