On Take-Off you obviously have a different situation in two ways: 1. The airplane is as heavy as it is going to get (unless you pick up a lot of ice ;D ) 2. You have time to figure out the best possible configuration for the current weight/temps/runway available calculation. Most of the documentation I recall had mixtures at FULL RICH there as well. On others it was AUTO RICH which in all likely hood would still produce a full rich mixture going to the cylinders in all but rare conditions during the initial WOT condition. As soon as you reduce MAP however that would change. And things in the sim might get even more fun when we release our upcoming FDE upgrade for the L-1049 series.....since Luis has found a few more hidden gems The only real "big" radial that I am personally familiar with are the two R-485s on the Twin Peach. And at least in the airplane I have flown in Takeoff was always in FULL RICH....but then again she was not exactly at MTOW. As a guess I would say that it was considered safer to takeoff in the guaranteed full rich setting than to risk loosing an engine if the automatic mixture control failed and leaned the engine when it was working the hardest.
