Hi all,
Here's a classic flight which unfortunately ended prematurely - this due to me forgetting to set the compatibility settings for FS9 in Windows 7. I've adjusted those settings now, though.
The flight is a military one: I'm flying a Belgian Air Force F-84G Thunderjet on a NATO-linked deployment from its base at Kleine Brogel (EBBL) to Kastrup (EKCH). There are records of this happening quite a lot during the fifties: prior to 1957, Kastrup also housed military units on the south part of the airport.
Much in the style as things were done back then during NATO-exercises, I'm keeping to a high speed and low altitude: my cruising speed is M 0.72 (480 KIAS), while my altitude is just 3000 feet...
The flight starts at Kleine Brogel, where my Thunderjet of 27 Squadron is taxying to the runway.
27 'Panther' Squadron was one of three squadrons of the 10th Fighter-Bomber Wing based at Kleine Brogel during the 1950s, the other two being 23 'Devil' and 31 'Tiger' Squadron. They were formed on Spitfire in 1951, before changing to F-84E/G Thunderjets in 1952. Together they converted to F-84F Thunderstreaks in 1956; 27 Squadron's story ended in 1962 due to defence cuts.
Minutes later I'm airborne. Kleine Brogel is only a short distance from the Dutch border, so I'm soon having to deal with other military traffic: RNlAF Thunderstreaks flying touch-and-go's at Eindhoven.
Having passed Eindhoven and Volkel, the visibility suddenly drops near RAF Brüggen.
Luckily the visibility soon improves again, but now I'm finding myself confronted with quite a lot of turbulence. Not a very comfortable ride!
Near Twente, the skies get cloudier again. Luckily I pass a couple of miles to the east of Twente, so I don't have to worry about traffic conflicts with the air base there.
Near Ahlhorn, there's some haze. At first it isn't too bad...
... but after a few minutes, visibility drops to a few miles. Around this time, I'm enter the Bremen/Hamburg airspace, so the sky gets a bit busier. First I get a traffic warning for a SAS Convair on an approach to Hamburg; minutes later it's for a Pan Am aircraft which has just taken off from Hamburg.
Having finally cleared Hamburg's airspace, the fog lifts when I get near to Kiel. In fact, the sky's completely clear, just as I'm about to cross the Femern Belt between Germany and Denmark.
Unfortunately, this is where the picture story ends. The rest of the journey was rather uneventful, and I forgot to take pictures of it because they would have turned out very much like the other ones. ATC had begun to guide me for a landing on Kastrup's 22L, and I was about 60 miles south-west of the airport when all of a sudden the sim froze and the screen turned black, and the little box appeared which told me FS9 "wasn't working anymore".
