Here is a good example of losing altitude. Lombard Street at KSFO has eight switch backs and packs a quarter mile of roadway into a single city block. Street is one way down hill and speed is reduced to 5 mph. S turns with retarded throttle should give the same effect. Jesse

Always one of the things we did when my family visited San Francisco was a drive down Lombard Street (it is one way). I always tried to include a trip to SFO, of course.

My favorite area of SFO. My old girl friend from WWII and 1942 had an apartment there at the corner of Lombard and Van Ness. Of course we were both married at the time I was stationed at Hamilton so there was just a friendly get together to talk over old times during the war. She married a really nice guy. Sadly, they are both gone now.

My brother and I take my Dad (90) for a ride in San Francisco when we go out to eat. Usually we make the trip down Lombard after 8pm when there is no traffic to put up with.
There is another street in SF similar to Lombard in the Potrero Hill area - Vermont St. just as narrow as Lombard but TWO WAY Lotsa luck if you meet a car going the opposite way!

Dave, that's one I missed. Next time I'm out your way, I'll make it a point to visit Vermont St.
One of the scariest roads I was ever on was a bit up to the north. We had a Radar Site up at Point Arena, and going up to that thing was taking your life in your hands. Several guys were killed in GI trucks going over the side.

Ah...Lombard St....I think I have a pic around somewhere with 20 of our Crossfires driving down that iconic bit of roadway. You can get over 5 mph ...... but of course I would never advocate or do that ;D ;D ;D ;D Not sure if any of you watch TopGear on BBC or BBC America. They recently visited Tito's personal folly in Rumania. Built under great monetary and human cost it looks a lot like Lomanrd St.....but for many many miles through amazing terrain. Made me want to pack my bags immediately Stefan
