Hi Guys. To some Flight Sim is just a game, yeah right. I think there is much more potential to Flight Sim than just a game. Personally I enjoy getting into my Flight Simulator and flying the aircraft as if I was really going to fly the airplane, but my flight knowledge is limited. With so many real world pilots on FSV that have VFR and Commercial flight experience, wouldn't it be awesome to put together a virtual flight school? Moving forward, I've spoken with two of FSV'S real world pilots this week on Team Speak about putting this idea of a virtual flight school together. At this point they both are interested in do this. The Virtual flight school would include a ground school, cockpit training and flight training. The flight school will cover VFR, instrument rating and navigation. It is my intention and the flight instructors to make this flight school professional and fun. I understand that these folks have real world obligations, so flight training session will be scheduled around their obligations. If you are interested in this virtual flight school you can sign up here fsvintageair.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=405

A good point Kenny. The U.S. Navy did not consider the sim to be just a game. It began back with FS2002 using it to train their Naval Aviator preflight school students. It quickly determined which of the students really had a flight aptitude.. It was a big success. It is still being used by the USAF cadets at the academy in Colorado Springs.

Hi Jesse.
Jesse, that is neat!
Well, at this point this virtual flight school is still in the planning stages, but what I will say here is that the two instructors that are going to be running this program are top notch. Personally I'm looking forward to signing up for this virtual flight school.
The school will be structured, to include reading material, written exams, navigational training and flight instruction. This may include latter in the program fly under ATC, virtually speaking.

To me one of the most unbelievable things is how underused the built in Flightschool of FS seems to be. After all you get to fly with one of the US most well known CFIs ....for free.
As for FS being just a game....well I for one completed my first real flight from taxi out to taxi in without my CFI ever touching the controls. He had his hands close to them for the first landing....but never touched them.
While there are of course some things that our humble home sims can't do justice you can learn a lot and then fill out the gaps in the real airplane.
When I did my IFR rating I tuned a FS PA28-181 to fly "exactly" like 8DC I was flying at that time...including the panel avionics. And it definitely made the process much easier. My CFI-I and I occasionally would use my sim setup to go over things that would not work so well in the real airplane. And to this day if I have an Angelflight to a destination I have not visited before and might need to fly IFR I'll fire up the digital Carenado Saratoga before 87B gets pulled out of the hangar.
