Is there somewhere a place to learn how to edit mdl files? For example, if I look inside them with notepad, i see references to bmp files which I cannot locate anywhere.
I know notepad isn't the way to muck about with mdl's but I'm really curious as to how you guys do it.
Thanks.

You normally cannot do much with MDL files - they have been compiled from separate source files. But if you want to, you can load them into ModelConverterX and then export as 3DS. These can be imported into GMAX and examined. But you will lose all the smoothing and all the animations, which will have to be recreated.
Note that any release of modified MDL files requires the permission of the original authors.
Hope this helps,

Thanks, Tom. I don't have any intention of messing about with an mdl; I probably won't live long enough to learn how. And I certainly wouldn't release anything I might do based on other's work. I don't think much of people who stand on my shoulders while telling others how much taller they are than I.
But, where would the bmp files referred to in the mdl's be located? I can't find them with a global search. Are they internal to the mdl?

Give me an example of a bmp file in the MDL file that's not in the texture folder. Note that _D textures are damage textures - if there is not one located in the texture folder, the regular texture is used instead.

Never mind.......we'll do it this way.....(RIP Gilda) I had set my search parameters to "Match Case" and of course in the mdl they are in caps.
Some, but not all, of the best jokes are those we play on ourselves.
Thanks Tom.

These are some lovely screenshots, but I have one question? Where did the Italian Line ocean liner (Cristoforo Colombo?) come from that is in the first screenshot?

Wow !! That is one awesome repaint Looks absolutely fantastic. I remember this livery well and saw it often when landing on Schiphol. I'll have a look why the air scoops in the rear are giving a problem. Might have to redo the mapping a bit in that area. Cheers, Jaap

Hi edetroit, Here are two screen shots that show the location of the airscoops. I think that indeed I have to remap the scoops again because looking at your screen prints they look a bit mixed up. I'll do them again tomorrow and upload new model files. Sorry for the inconvenience. Jaap

Sorry for the inconvenience. Jaap Hello Jaap, I tried everything and came to the conclusion the scoops needed to be re-mapped. Thankyou in advance for the fix ......there is quite a large area on the fuselage texture below the fuselage rear that is not being used. Mean time I will improve the wing textures. I have also noticed the landing lights are incorrect (they should be retractable under the wing leading edge) ... but it does not bother me that much.
